Kindles and ebook covers
I've noticed that when I open new mobi ebooks I've loaded on to my new Kindle most of them do not open at the cover of the ebook.

Is this to be expected? Or am I doing something wrong? Is there a way of making sure that new ebooks (previously unread) open at the cover?

No, it's a feature apparently. They open at whatever is set as the first chapter point, or at the page just after the cover if there are no chapter points.

If you use the screensaver hack you can put a file in there called cover.png and change it each time you start a new book.

With Mobi files, the cover image is considered part of the metadata, and as such the Kindle is not set up to be "opened to" metadata. Their are tricks and hoops to jump through (like adding the cover image as an inline-image in the text) to force it to start at a cover image, but to be honest... the average Kindle user is used to not seeing the cover on books they purchase (unless they really, really want to... and in that case they know how). It's really not worth fighting, but if you insist... there's a few threads in the Mobi forum that discuss workarounds/solutions. I'll see if I can track them down.

Thanks, DiapDealer. I've found a mention myself in the Amazon free download Amazon Kindle Free Publishing Guidelines, but so far I haven't been able to understand it.
