Screen Grabs

Is there a way to do them on the 650? I've seen a few posts where the images attached look like screen grabs (print screens) but I can't figure out how to do it. It took the PRS+ hack to be able to do it on my 505.

Its available as part of the Boroda/Porkupan hack for PRS650. You can read more about it in this thread (post #4 onwards). The details are on the Russian ebook forum.

I installed it last week with no problems at all.

When you installed it, what was the default language? Did you lose bookmarks/notes or any books? Is the battery life the same?

My PRS-650 is only a week old so hard to assess battery life. It's been connected to the PC so often whilst I play around that it's permanently on 100% I've read in a thread somewhere that it shouldn't affect battery life.

I didn't have any bookmarks set so I had none to lose.

I didn't lose any books, but I only had a handful loaded.

The only notes I had were the samples that came as standard. They're still there, so no, they weren't lost. Nor were the standard image and audio files.

I did do a backup of the whole machine before I loaded the hack. Luckily I didn't need it afterwards.

Nope! I was all over the hacking with the 505 and PRS+ (just as I do with my Kindles). I like navigating the the touch screen but I hate swiping for page turns (even the little thumb swipes). Now I have the Options key set for page forward and the normal page back key. This makes me very happy!

Now to resurrect my old CSS for my Fontin font.

So how is the battery life on the 650 with this modified firmware?

I don't know. I haven't had it long enough to tell you what battery life before the flash. I've not fully charged it since the day I brought it home 2-3 weeks ago and I'm just reading my first book on it. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

I've been using the boroda firmware 1.03d for about a month now. I will typically recharge the battery sometime after it hits one bar and that usually takes about one week. I read about 1-2 hours a day and do a full shut down before bed each night. Standby is used between short reading sessions during the day.

I don't know if the clock on the new Readers makes a difference in battery life as the clock changes regardless of whether the page is changed or not.

Supposedly you can change that to have the clock change only on screen update. But I'm not sure if you'd need a newer firmware or not.

@JSWolf, Here is a quote from Porkupan (boroda) himself, dated 30th Sept, 2010...
Quote:
There should be no noticeable effect on the battery life. The 350/650 firmware uses hardware timers to wake up the JS, which do not appear to drain the battery in any significant way at all. In previous generations of readers the JS timers required the software to run for them to work. Not so in PRS-x50. The clock update doesn't count as a page turn. There is no flash access and only a very small portion of the screen is updated.

The hardware timer fires once a minute while the reader is not in sleep mode. Most people read more than a page per minute, so the clock updates attached to page turns will actually drain the battery faster than hardware timer-based clock.
