Glasgow Herald problem with 0.7.25 software
I updated Calibre to the new version 0.7.25 yesterday.
The Glasgow Herald is normally emailed to my iPhone and downloaded into Stanza - this has worked flawlessly until this morning when using the new software version. I now get the error message; "Glasgow Herald (Sat, 30th Oct 2010) - 5" : Unknown file format for "Glasgow Herald (Sat, 30th Oct 2010) - 5" : EPUB metadata has no spine. Uninstalling 0.7.25 and reinstalling 0.7.24 gives no problem with the Glasgow Herald. Any idea how to fix this? |

Sorry I can't give you a direct answer. I can only say that the Herald frequently has problems with its feeds. It's not Calibre's fault.
I've got Calibre set up to download the Herald automatically each morning and to save it in Kindle format. Five or six times per week, everthing's fine. But on other days, all I get is a file with the section headings and nothing else. The last time that happened was Friday (29th October), The Saturday edition (30th) was OK. I don't know if this is relevant to your problem. You can try going to the Herald's website and checking that the RSS feed is present. I hope you find the solution. |

With software version 0.7.25 the Herald gives the error message when trying to download into Stanza after emailing to my iphone. With 0.7.24 the Herald gives no error message. In both cases I'm using the same edition of the Herald - Sat 30th - both open fine within Calibre itself. I have had the error you talk about and I think it was yesterday as you say. What version of Calibre did you use today? Did you email it to your Kindle and was it fine there? |

Sigh, I hate stanza. The EPUB news format has changed in 0.7.25 to support SONY periodicals. The EPUBs are still perfectly valid, trust stanza to be the only app that cannot read them.
Use another of the myriad epub readers available for the iphone or downgrade to 0.7.24 |

I am having a similar problem. If I download news (using ver. 7.32) using as output Sony 900, then try to open the file in Stanza on the ipad I get exactly the same error reported above (EPUB metadata has no spine). If I change the output to iPad and download the same news file again it will open in stanza without problem. I thought that ePub format was portable across devices. My problem is, I use both the Sony reader and the iPad and I don't want to download the same news twice using different outputs.
Any ideas how to fix that? Thanks! (Incidentally, I LOVE calibre and am amazed at how many different features I keep finding!) |

I see. Thanks for the information. I don't suppose there is a way to adjust the output of news differently from the default, without changing the preferences?

Sorry for being slow, but can I do that without changing my default Epub output? I do have a Sony reader which I use for most of my reading, so I want that to be my default output. But for news, I also want to be able to transfer them to the iPad, both through iTunes and through Dropbox (into Stanza). So can I only change the output of the news? Thanks!

changing the output profile wont mean your books become unreadable on the sony reader
