Google Book PDF: converts only 1-3 pages

I downloaded Calibre yesterday and have OSX Snow Leopard. I added a downloaded Google Books PDF to convert to MOBI and it looks like everything works. Says it is converting, but seems to convert TOO fast for a complete book. Says the conversion is complete. But when I try to open the MOBI file, all I have is the Google Introduction. I tried removing the introduction and book cover pages in the PDF. Imported and tried again and it says it is complete (very quickly) and then it is only page 1. I don't get any error messages.

I tried more than one file, thinking maybe it was just that particular book.

Is there a problem converting the PDF downloads from Google? I tried searching the forum, but didn't find anything close.

Last time I looked at the Google PDF books they are a text based intro for the first few pages and the remainder of the book is a series of images. Unfortunately, calibre does not support image based PDF files. See if Google has an EPUB version of the book available. That will convert properly.

Thanks

Thanks -- that makes sense. I think most of the ones I want have an EPUB version. I'll try that.

Have a great holiday season with happy reading!

Calibre won't convert an image based PDF to a text based EPUB. OTOH, I've got some image based PDF comics (20 pages or so) and they convert to image based EPUBs just fine. I haven't tried it with page images, but I presume that would work - it's just that it wouldn't be very satisfactory as compared to a true text based EPUB. They'd be large and hard to read. He might as well stick with the PDF or convert to CBZ, CBR, CBC.
