"New" tag

After opening a book it looses the "new" tag. Is there any way to retag it as "new"?

no, I don't believe so. the best way to keep track of the new books is either with your collections, or making sure they stay to the top of the list

I put all the "new" stuff in an "unread" file. Easier to keep track of stuff I've yet to read.

for each book Kindle creates a file with the name of the book and the "mbp" extension, perhaps, the removal of these files will help.

The mbp files are in the same folder as the ebook. So either in documents or a subfolder if you have further organized the content.

Nope, deleting mbp files doesn't bring the "new" tag back.
