For those who liberate their eBooks
Do you keep only your liberated books in Calibre or do you also keep your original purchased books, say from Amazon. If you keep both, how do you distinguish between the non-DRM and DRM versions.
Thanks Carol |

Purchased books are managed with Adobe Digital Editions.

Who cares about the original purchase? Once liberated, you don't need the crippled original anymore.

There aren't "two" books, just the one, thats been 'unlocked', that can be read on any device. The ones stored at Amazon are still there. THEY are still drm'd. If you re-download them, they will need to be stripped again. The ones on Calibre are not. Make sense? |

Oh........and this.
If you can read your books on Calibre, they are NOT drm'd. Calibre will not read drm'd books and a pop up window will let you know if they are.. Therefore, all books on Calibre would be without drm. |

Personally, I keep only the liberated books in Calibre. The DRM'd books don't do me much good and I don't want Calibre accidentally sending the wrong version to my reader. I've done that before and it's a hassle to delete it and reload the liberated version.
However, that being said, the originals are still in the Adobe Digital Editions folder for epub and pdf, and in the Kindle for PC folder for Amazon books. I do that "just in case" I need them again or lose the Calibre database. Hope this helps. |

Backup your Calibre database and books. Then you don't need the originals. Besides, if you ever do need the originals, you should be able to re-download them from wherever you purchased them in the first place.

I do back up my database, but I've had occasions where somehow the liberation didn't go properly and I had to reprocess the books. I don't really have that many as I try not to buy DRM enabled books, so keeping them isn't that much of an issue.
Also, what happens if/when the store you purchased them from originally goes out of business? |

Any DRMd book I buy goes into the folder called 'Locked' after I've downloaded it through Adobe. A copy without DRM is then made in the folder called 'Unlocked'. Said title then wanders into the 'Base Library' folder where I do any desired editing in Sigil (or any necessary corrections, dammit!). The 'Base Library' folder is the source used by Calibre to add to the Calibre library. Obviously there's a useful degree of backup given that different disk drives are involved.

Ok. So I have another question for all of you. Which version do you load on your ereader, the liberated version or the DRM version?
Thanks, Carol |

Why would you ever do anything with the DRMed version of the book after liberating it?
