PRS-950 Exasperated with reader library software

Ok, I'm trying to transfer notes and DRM content from the demo unit to the reader library before I send off the unit. I have it installed on two pcs. On one pc with windows xp, the software crashes everytime I plug in my reader. On my windows 7 pc, I sync it but nothing is transferred from my device to the pc.
How can I get my notes and DRM books transferred so I can upload them to the replacement device? Thanks in advance for any and all input.

D, My experience has been that syncing messes things up when multiple PCs are involved; thus, I always do <copy> <paste>.

A few questions: Do you actually sync collections on your 950 with the Windows 7 PC normally? It sounds like you don't which is why nothing is transferring during sync. When you look at the ebooks on your device within the Reader Library do you have arrows over the book icon? The arrows mean they are synced ebooks. I am going to assume for now that the answer is that you don't have arrows and provide some suggestions.

On the Windows 7 PC, within the Reader Library, did you try to drag and drop the ebooks from your device to the PC Library? In other words move them from "Books" on the Reader to "Library" on your PC in the left-hand column. That will take the books off your device and put them on your hard-drive. Your notes should go with the books. Once you see it in the Reader Library on your PC Library, then you can open it to double-check that you see your notes. Then you should be able to upload your books from the PC Library to the new 950 and the notes will go with them.

You could also drag and drop the ebooks from your Reader to your hard-drive via Windows Explorer (Mac Finder). However, I don't think that will retain your notes.

Somebody else might have a calibre suggestion. I mostly use the Sony Reader Library so I am not sure how calibre would deal with annotations.

If your notes are handwritten notes, via the Handwriting Application rather than book markups, then the process is different and you don't need Reader Library.

I was informed on this forum that dragging & dropping books would result in failure to transfer annotations, that's why I synced. If Ilm wrong I'll d&d.

The key is that you have to drag-and-drop within the Sony software. I just did a test with my 950 to drag-and-drop an ebook within the Sony Reader Library software, and it worked fine. I think if you drag-and-drop outside the Sony software, like via Windows Explorer, then the proper information does not go with your EPUB file because your notes are stored in other files on the ereader. But, the Sony software takes care of that.

First step, have you checked that you can see the notes on the books on your ereader? Within the Reader Library software, scroll down the left hand column to your ereader device icon. Expand it and open a book from the ereader memory. Once the book is open in the viewer, click on the notepad icon in the lower left hand of the viewer box to see a list of your notes.

Second step, did you confirm that your ebooks on your ereader have arrows over their icon in the Reader Library? I just wanted to make sure that you are setup to sync ok. If the books have arrows, then the software won't allow you to drag and drop anyway since they are setup to sync.

If the answer to both of these questions is yes - you can see your notes on the ebooks on the ereader and they are setup to sync properly - then here is the next step. In the Reader Library preferences, check the box to turn on "Merge all notes when syncing with Reader device". If this item is not checked and turned off, then your notes won't transfer from the ereader to the PC Library copy because you've intentionally told it not too. Perhaps that might be your issue?

That's good news!

Connect your old reader to the computer in Reader Library. Click on the Sony eBook Store icon. Log-in to your account and go the the account information page (My Account Link at the top of the page). On the account page, you will see a category called "My Devices". Click the item that says "Manage/Rename Devices" (it's to the right of the name of your computer and ereaders). On the new window, click the deauthorize button to the right of your ereader. Make sure you don't accidentally click the deauthorize button next to your computer.

Do you also have Adobe Digital Editions installed? If so, open ADE. Do you see your ereader icon showing in ADE? Click on the icon for your device. Then press Ctrl-Shift-E and the deactivation dialog should show up.
