linux_installer fails (proably proxy)

Following the instructions:

sudo python -c "import urllib2; exec urllib2.urlopen('http://status.calibre-ebook.com/linux_installer').read(); main()"


Fails.

I strongly suspect this is because I need to use a proxy.
So what I'd like to do is run as separate steps . I've manged to download the file linux_installer ... but it's not clear how ...how to run this ...
(typing python linux_installer .. does nothing)

untar it into the directory you want it installed in, then run the

calibre_postinstall command in the installation dir.
