The Waiting Game - No Longer - Called Sony and got 10% Off!

I learned my lesson after the Sony Black Friday week sale fiasco (many predicted the sale would continue or be better, but it went away completely). Unfortunately, I didn't realise then that Sony are so frigid with their sales, or I'd already have one. Now I'm in limbo since Christmas is coming up and a sale may happen again.

I plan to have one within the month sale or no sale, but of course I'd prefer the cheaper price so I'm stuck wondering if there will be another sale close to Christmas and am in a waiting game.

So who else is in the boat with me?

Sony Style Store and retailers like Best Buy were selling the 950 for $249. Some online vendors were lower, but who knows how legit they are and if people will get their orders filled anytime soon.

I bought mine at Best Buy for $249. The statement from Sony was that the sale would end after Nov 27th and many thought it wouldn't and lost out on a huge discount. Sony is not likely to have very many sales. They are like Apple in that regards--greedy a$$h***s.

Dunno if this helps, but I just bought a 650 from the sonystyle site. I called em and just asked em if I could get a discount since I missed the sale last week, and they gave me free shipping and 10% off.

Not as great as the 199 price, but still, better than ebay or anywhere else currently.

Thanks!

So they only had the 950 on sale.

Not entirely true. Apple exercises pretty firm control of pricing on all their products even in the open market, and you rarely ever find any core Apple products marked significantly below the SRP. OTOH, Sony products do often get marked down by authorized retailers.

I think Sony's got their e-reader strategy all wrong (they're neither underpricing the hardware to boost the margin on the platform side nor doing a pure-hardware game like their notebook line), but that's a topic for a different thread. I still love my Sony readers though.

I bought my 650 at MSRP from Sony Style. When Border's offered a PRS 650 with a free cover a few days later, I called Sony and at first they offered to match the price. Then after they looked at the advertisement they said it was a bundle price and they didn't match bundles $ for $. They offered a 10% discount though.

My point is that for the reader alone, Sony does have a policy of price matching. Any other combination may not. In my experience they were helpful and courteous.

Buy it from Sony now--then watch for discounts before Christmas and call them if a good deal (non-bundle) shows up.

The waiting game is over for me!

Thanks so much for that valuable info hydin! That's some clever thinking.

At this point, I was itching to get one soon, so to convince me to buy one I was looking for basically any sort of discount to make it seem like I'm getting a little extra value than just regular full price.

So 10% seemed great to me. That's $30 off the 950, so really I'm only spending $20 more than the deal I would've gotten last week. While $20 isn't pennies, it's not a lot either, and is way better than $50 more. Plus if it goes on sale again in the next few weeks, I may be able to call up and get back more.

So I called them up just now and ordered one! The lady was very nice and when I asked her about a discount because I'd missed the sale last week, she said she'll give me 10% off. I pressed for a short moment to see if maybe she'd match the $249 from last week but 10% was the best she would do. It was enough for me.

I also asked if I could just go to the physical store and pick it up with the 10% but she said no, the stores aren't authorised to do discounts like that. But when I considered for a moment, she threw in expedited shipping for free (she said it's normally $25) so I'd have it by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Can't beat that!

I was on a roll, so I gave in and bought a case too. She gave me 10% on it too. I got the cover with light. It's expensive, but I know there's not many options for cases and I wanted a light anyway too. She was nice enough to tell me that if I wanted to wait on the case, that once I got my reader and registered it, I'd get a coupon for 15% off an accessory, but that she could order it now at 10% if I preferred to have it arrive with my 950. I did the math and I'd only save $2.50 extra at 15% and waiting, so I just went ahead and ordered it too. But I was impressed that she told me of the 15% possibility anyway.

Now I'll have my 950 in a few days - can't wait!

like Tom Petty sang ... the waiting is the hardest part...

I really like my new 950. Using the great Calibre software (Thanks Kovid and others!) to download daily feeds is just great. It gets FREE info from 200+ sources including (the Chicago Tribune, Rolling Stone, Engadget, and other periodicals) to my PC and then to the reader via USB.

Enjoy your new reader. For me, the 950 was a great upgrade from my 505.

I tried the same via email (as I don't live in US), but the response was:

Hmm there are extra problems for me.. for one I'm ordering from australia and would probly have to use a freight forwarding service. PRS-950s aren't available in my country and prs-650s are going for $299!! Don't know how well sonystyle would take to my calling them and giving an aussie address.. so the waiting game continues.
