Greetings From Arizona

We bought a Kindle 3 with 3G in September, after researching the topic here and elsewhere for several months. My wife is the primary user, as she is a voracious reader.

I opted for the more expensive 3G model as we take trips around the country in our small Casita travel trailer several times a year, and having a free, albeit limited, Internet access when we're in the boondocks will come in handy. My only hope is that Amazon keeps this free, at least until I get my extra $50 out of it!

She is very, very happy with the Kindle, including the $59 lighted cover we bought from Amazon. I am pleased with the variety of free books available, which when combined with purchased ones, should keep her well occupied. The only negative is that she will no longer have books to turn into the used bookstore for credits on used books, but I suspect her days of pre-ebooks are largely over.

I decided to register as I just discovered how to remove hidden quotation marks and apostrophes from epub formatted books, so that the conversion in Calibre to mobi doesn't result in question marks in little boxes, and I thought posting that should the question come up (again) in a thread, might prove useful to someone in the future. A small amount of payback for the great amount I have learned from this forum.

Glad to be a part of it!

Patrick and Marilyn

Good to have your company, Patrick and Marilyn. I used to get travel sick if I tried to read on paper as a car or bus passenger (no problem with trains and boats and planes); not uncommon I believe. Never tried it with an ebook-reader, though. Anyone anything to report? Best wishes. Neil

Thanks for all the welcoming messages! I might mention I have an iPod Touch which I've loaded with some books and since I carry it with me most of the time I'm able to get some reading done too. Currently reading "Two Years Before the Mast", which I highly recommend for a look at coastal California in the early 1800s.

Hi Patrick, hi Marilyn.

Welcome to MobileRead. Let us know what you think of the Kindle. I'm still shopping around for an eReader. So many to choose from I don't know which one is best, it's worse than shopping around for toothpaste. lol.

Consumer Reports just rated the Kindle 3 #1 (3G) and #2 (WiFi) on their list of e-book readers so I would just go with the market leader and start reading!

My wife loves her Kindle, and I think it is a high quality product with some nice Internet features thrown in for good measure.

I must admit that I am leaning more towards the Kindle, not just because it's been around longer and advertised more, but simply because it's been talked about more. Thanks for the advice.

Hello, Patrick and Marilyn. The more you use your Kindle, you won't worry about turning in books to the used bookstore. I love Arizona.
