Will Kindle work in Australia purchased in USA
Hi
I live in the USA and my daughter is living in Australia. She is coming here for Xmas and i want to buy her a Kindle. Couple of quick questions. 1. Will both the wifi and 3g version work? 2. The US version will have a charger i assume she just needs a plug adapter to use in Australia. I really appreciate any advice. |

Yes, the US kindle will work fine for both 3G and Wifi. I have a US version too (in Australia). The signal is strong, and free for websurfing, plus purchasing books from the Amazon site. The only thing she will have to pay for is if she is subscribed to magazines and blogs, AND she wants to download via 3G. I think that will cost $4 a week. But she will be able to download these for free is she only uses wifi.
The cable cord you get with all Kindles can be plugged into any laptop for charging, or the blackberry charger will work. I have heard now that the iphone USB charger will charge the kindle 3 (but it didnt charge the kindle 2). Or she could buy the Amazon charger for Australia. |

I really appreciate the info. As i have a US address is it best to set up an account for her in the us so she can easily download books ? Or is it just as easy using an OZ account? |

I would get the kindle sent to your account and address in the USA. If you trust your daughter, keep her on your account because most times, books are more freely available in the US and usually cheaper, than if bought using an Australian address. If she decided to set up her own account, she can always do that, and have both your US address, and her Australian address added to it. And she can then 'move' if the books she wants are not available in Australia (and vice versa) Given that the kindle will actually have shipped to your USA address, I dont think she will get any 'please explain' emails from Amazon.

I can recommend the gorgeous Amazon pink cover too! Have a great Christmas. Lucky girl, it is hot hot hot here at the moment and all we are hearing about is snow up there. Would love a white Christmas.

Absolutely use your US address for registering her Kindle. Australian Kindle owners don't have access to blogs or games, and have a smaller range of ebooks available - both free and paid. From memory Amazon do charge a surcharge for US Kindles roaming overseas, however the access to the larger range of material far out ways the extra cost.

the only roaming charge is for downloading subscriptions and blogs. Surfing the Internet and buying books from amazon is free for all kindles everywhere in the world using 3G, and of course, wifi.

She could probably set up her own account tied to your address.

Whilst technically true, many books that are free to US owners are not free for Australian owners.
