I'm guessing that the percent-off coupons could only be used for non-Agency books, but I'm wondering if the free e-book would also have to be non-Agency.
I have e-mailed Kobobooks to ask, since they don't provide the fine print on the site, but does anyone know from past such promotions? Thanks. |

Not sure about this one. I know the $3 off reusable coupon code from last weekend did not apply to Agency books in the US. Apparently some folks in Canada were able to use it for Agency books though.

Yes, the free book would also have to be non-agency, as that would be changing the price. I think (but I would check with them on this also) you could buy the agency books that have been reduced to qualify for one of the coupons because that would not affect the price on the agency books. That would be a cheaper way to qualify for the coupon. Most of them are in the Cheap Reads category here:

I have yet to hit a roadblock buying a Kobo book. Yes, the Agency 5 thing is a nuisance ... but it doesn't affect most of the titles ... it's only a subset.
And, if the Agency 5 is really a problem, then that just makes their case that only they publish titles worth reading. Yes .. they publish strong titles ... but they aren't the only game in town. I continue to support Kobo because they offer the titles I want to buy and they often have an incentive as well. |

Kobo does such a great job at making non-agency stuff affordable that I'd be willing to get the occasional full price book from them as a sort of "thank you" gesture.

I haven't heard back from Kobobooks, but I went ahead and ordered enough to qualify for a free e-book, so we'll see!

Here's the response I got from Kobobooks this morning about whether the free e-book had to be a non-Agency book:

![]() I would answer them using the language they always use in their emails and say "Can the free book be by Hachette Book Group USA, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Macmillan, and all respective subsidiary imprints?" |

I did mention the specific publishers in my answer, but I still can't believe the customer service person didn't know what I was talking about--or didn't at least turn to a colleague and try to find out. I would think that they'd get numerous inquiries and complaints about why their coupons are rejected on certain books and be aware of the issue.
No new response yet. |

I never did hear back from Kobo's customer service, but I did receive my coupon for a free book, and sure enough, it limited me to non-Agency books. But did I ever score! As I was browsing I noticed a listing for "The Complete Tudors: Nine Historical Novels" by Jean Plaidy. Kobo's sale price was $74, and though I didn't really think it would work, I tried my free coupon--and got the omnibus for FREE! Woo-hoo!
