The way it works during reading is that you go to "Menu", select "Dictionary", then select the word you want with the D-pad, and it pops up the definition (and pronunciation guide).
Whether it's a good dictionary or not, I have no idea- I never use it... :P

The dictionary also only works with books in Kobo format (ie NON ePubs). As far as I can see there is no way of using it as a general purpose dictionary.

Also, lookups appear to have to be for the precise word in question; I tried looking for the plural of a word yesterday, just for fun, and the word was not found.

Frankly, I'm not sure the dictionary is a useful feature.

Thank you for your information.
Me I need a built in dictionary because I'm not an English speaker.

Oh, I never noticed that! You're right, it doesn't work on the sideloaded epubs I got from here. That's silly. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even seem to work on a book I bought from kobobooks! That's not right. Off to complain...

I love my kobo, but it does seem to have a few bugs (like this dictionary one). But they're fixing them, they said.
Or were you asking about the dictionary? Like I said, I don't use it, but then I never use paper dictionaries either. I could see it being useful for learning new words, because it does tell you how to pronounce the word, as well, and that's a good thing (I know, because I'm not a native English speaker either, and I've been laughed at for mispronouncing words that I've learned from books).
