Lanyard for Kindle 3?
I've finally purchased my first Kindle, latest gen, Kindle 3.
![]() I really would like a lanyard for it but haven't been able to find any references for one. Has anyone found/created one? Something that maybe could slip into one of the slots on the left side? I have a clip that would pinch the width (& link to a strap/cord) but am afraid that the tension of the clip would be too much pressure along the side or top of the kindle. There are so many different types of cases, is there a lightweight one with perhaps a hand strap along the back? I know there are cases with stands for hands free reading but that wouldn't work too well for bedtime. I really do not want to drop the kindle and need to keep it as light as possible. Any help for my poor hands would be appreciated. Thanks |

The slots are intended to accommodate the Amazon case (and some 3rd party cases with Amazon's permission, I gather) - two prongs slide into those slots and anchor the kindle in the case. The Amazon lighted case actually gets power from inside those slots. I don't think using them would be easy or safe. Although, snapping open the case might show something inside to wrap a lanyard cord around.
One suggestion which would create a minor deface of your kindle would be to locate a place on the kindle where you could drill a very fine, small hole and run a lanyard cord through it. There are pictures and videos of dissembled kindles so you might be able to find a location that does not impinge on any electronics. Looking at it, I'd say if you do not use headphones and so far the microphone serves no purchase, you might be able to loop strong monofilament fishing line between the headphone jack and the microphone port and then loop a lanyard through that (I did something similar with my Tomtom920 gps unit). I am somewhat surprised when certain small, handheld items to not have lanyard attachment points. I created on for my Blackberry 8830 and as I noted, for my tomtom gps. |

I would recommend something that uses doubled sided tape instead of a permanent modification. Perhaps you can use something like this clip, and if you don't want the whole clip, just cut it at the bend, grind it round so that there are no jagged edges, and then drill it for a lanyard. I would just use the whole clip and fashion a lanyard for it if it were me. Sorry this is the best that I can do:
http://www.niteize.com/products/eclipse I use one of these clips on my iphone and they are quite fabulous but I'm not using it with a lanyard, but I have put a key ring spring thinggy (one of those round key ring metal spiral rings) around the clip and it has allowed me to use lanyard or whatever else I needed for additional flexibility. This may be a even better option for you. I picked several of these clips up at REI |

Your best bet would probably be to attach the lanyard directly to a cover rather than the K3. That would make it easier to do and less damaging to the K3. Until now, I've never heard of anyone wanting to attach a lanyard to a K3 so there probably are not many commercial options available. Sounds like a do-it-yourself project.

On your combined suggestions, I found a video of someone dissecting a 3G+wifi (mine is wifi only). It is pretty tight inside with the comms “stuff” running around an edge and the other tucked into a corner area. There is not much room for a hole anywhere without being a surgeon or engineering tech used to working on these types of packages.
I liked the idea about maybe threading fishing line thru the earphone/microphone area, but from the video it seems the earphone jack is a complete box unit and I’m not tech enough to want to open and try to jiggle it around etc. I had thought of just using the jack with an earphone plug cut and looped to a lanyard, but I think it may be too heavy. I will try the weight when I get an earphone. While surfing for the video demo, I found a site that talked about the top 20 covers and one of them has a hand strap! The Marware Eco-Flip Kindle Flip Case. On examining other cases, looking for the lightest one that incorporates a stand, the Tuff-Luv Multi-view cases seems to also leave the top area open enough that it may even allow for a light to be attached when desired. I could use the fishing line idea to loop around part of the case and link to a lanyard, or I suppose rig a strap similar to the Marware case. The adhesive hook was a good idea, but I haven’t committed to the idea of no case yet. It is still too new for me and believe it or not I keep it in a pencil box on my coffee table while deciding to “encase” or not. LOL Thanks for listening! |

Thank you! I swear every time I think I've done a thorough search on amazon... up pops something I didn't find.
![]() I did a search on your TrendyDigital WaterGuard Plus Waterproof Case with Padding for Kindle 3. They've come out with a smaller one for the 3 that will be perfect for outdoor or workout use! I'd hate to deal with key use through the plastic for reading in bed etc. I've also found other forums (there are 1000s I guess) that have discussed lanyard ideas. One idea so simple, using a wide rubber band around the kindle and linking to it. As long as the band doesn't slip or break and is replaced over time.... sounds cool. ![]() |
