Can we un-karma people please!!!

Perhaps I'm just getting grumpy in my old age(!)

But recently there's been a spate of non-Kindle / ex-Kindle owners coming into the Kindle forum with the sole reason (I believe anyway) of doing nothing more than stirring and also mis-informing potential Kindle owners. I wouldn't dream of going off into the Sony forum and start slating the Sony e-ink devices or Apple devices etc

Perhaps it happens in many of the forums and I just don't see it because I stick to the Kindle one with the aim of sharing information and trying to help people out where I can.

I'm only citing the Kindle forum as that's where I choose to spend most of my time - just an example. But also fed up with people (often newbies, sometimes not) who seem to be there just to criticize other people's posts instead of adding anything constructive themselves.

Sorry couldn't find a MOAN FORUM to post in but I'd love to have an un-Karma tool or a tool that indicates that I don't agree with what someone is posting (or that it doesn't add anything to the discussion) but I suppose that's not very generously spirited of me.

for listening - obviously I just needed to let off some steam!

And sorry for hijacking the lounge - especially as I don't come here often

Oh, I agree, some people have too much Karma! We should be able to even out karma counts!

You can also make a request in the feedback area:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=13

I think, though, that there was once a request to allow for giving negative karma. I don't think it ever went anywhere.

Instead of asking for a negative karma option, maybe you could ask for a "Like" and "Dislike" vote for each individual post. They might be able to implement that for you.

Yes I think I'd like a "Like" or "Dislike" button for each post.

Thinking about it - the un-karma is a bad idea as it could be very badly abused. Goes against the spirit of things a bit as well.

But I like the idea of identifying whether I agree with something or not without having to actually say so in a post and risk a war of words.

What if someone goes for the highest negative karma score?

I'm guessing they will become the scourge of the universe and probably have to eat a bug instead of a monkey.

I'm on another board that has "like" and "dislike" buttons on each post and based on how they are used there, I have to say I don't think it would be any different than including the option to give negative karma.

I guess it would depend on the implementation. If the powers that be chose to put such an option in place, they could hopefully make it so a tally is kept at the bottom of the particular post. That way each user could see if people generally "liked" or "disliked" that individual post. The way karma is done now, we can't really tell which posts added to a person's reputation.

There would, of course, be opportunities for abuse. A wave of kindle users could band together and put a "thumbs down" to any post that criticizes their preferred device. Sony users could then strike back in kind and you end up having a "Like/Dislike" war. Still, there is something to be said about allowing people to give positive feedback to a user and allowing others to see exactly where it came from.
