Aluratek Libre $69.99 at Ultimate Electronics
Wow, I thought I'd time travelled to Black Friday today at Ultimate Electronics. They had the white Aluratek Libre for $69.99. I'd been comparing the JBL and Libre for a few months now and had decided to go with whichever I could get for the best price. Earlier this week I *almost* pulled the trigger for the $89.99 JBL with the free ear-light at Newegg.
It's charging now, cant wait to try it out. Oh, and this was the version with the 2G sd card so the 100 PD books aren't in the internal memeory. Well, I'm off to re-read the threads on loading library books! |

Congrats Wanda Lynn! Last year for Black Friday, Newegg had the Libre for $135, and that seemed like a steal. You got it a year later for about half that!

Thanks for posting!! My parents live 3 miles away from one. It is on clearance. I have 1 on hold for them to pick up for me. This will be Cmas present from them. I hope I won't have any problems with it. The closest store to me is 5 hours away.

Wow, my Libre cost me $100 at Borders a few months ago you did better than me. Now here are a few tips for a new Libre owner from someone who has had a Libre for a while. 1) Keep a pen near by the Libre will slip up now and then (its slipped up twice in three months so its rather rare), you use that pen to push the reset button at back that will make the Libre re-boot. 2) Charge the libre at night when you go to bed approximately two to three hours per night will keep the Libre fully charged.

I just got an Aluratek from Borders also, had some Borders Bucks, so that brought it below the $99, and had free shipping. I am loving it. I have a Kindle also, and am happy I can now take advantage of books from more sources, particularly the library. I just got a library card from the Free Library of Philadelphia ($15 for out of staters - cool deal) Looks like they have a good selection of ebooks, and my local library is pretty good, too! I have had to reset my ALP a couple of times, but I think I was trying to do too many things at once. I got an SD card, mine came with out, and I had loaded some books to internal memory, but have changed all to the SD card and I find the reader is more responsive, quicker. I love the forums at mobileread - posters are helpful, interesting, courteous! Thank you!

When I got mine, it crashed all the time. But as soon as I stopped trying every single function one right after another, and actually started reading on it, it became very stable.

Wow! That was a great price. I paid approx $189 Cnd for my ALP and $210 for the JB all earlier this year. Don't worry about missing out on the Ear-light. I got one with my JB and I was disappointed in it. In stead I purchased one of those headlight bands that have approx 12 LED's and uses 3 AAA batteries. It has a variable power setting (1 LED, 5 LED's or all LED's). I use it for reading in bed when my wife is sleeping. The light didn't cost more than $10 and I find it more comfortable than the ear-light.
I would recommend loading up the latest FW 19d just out. Besides adding support for the German Language it should add support for the TOC within ePub as well as Content search in both ePub and PDF e-books. TOC is only supported in ePub and PDF but content search was available for all the other formats. Enjoy John |

jlg432,
Can you redescribe again the added features you found with firmware 0.19d? I kept rereading your last post several times but maybe my brain is being overwhelmed by turkey fumes or what but I just cannot make out what you said exactly. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving everyone. |

Most Firmware updates are usually set-up to include all prior changes that were added in older FW. The exception would be when a change introduced a bug in which case the new firmware would contain the modified version of an update to neutralize the problem or it's omission altogether. When they list what update the new firmware is for they usually only indicate the new functions and bug fixes.
If you are required to be at a certain level of firmware before you can advance to the next level, this should be part of the notification. In these cases you should be given access to any required older FW's. So really any firmware beyond 17d should include active TOC within ePubs as well as "Content search" in ePub and PDF. Each new firmware is a copy of the older FW plus the new additions. I didn't see FW 18d when it was realeased. I wonder if it was released to fix a problem with 17d. I have been on the look out but for some reason I don't get auto notified. I just tried to access Aluratek.com and was given a "Band-width exceeded" error for the site. I'll try again later as instructed. When I first bought my ALP it was at FW level 17 (no letter following the 17). It did not support TOC for ePub. Only PDF had TOC support but PDF did not have "Content Search". PDF at that time did have "Text Flow" support which the JB did not have until FW 35a. I hope I was clear in explaining how firmwares work (in most cases). Again this all depends on the manufacturer and how savy they are w/re to customer support. John |
