Wealthy males supporting e-books market

Financial Times has an article saying that the ebook market is being propped up by young investment bankers who don't actually read the books! What?!

Published: November 18 2010 23:34 | Last updated: November 18 2010 23:34
Investment bankers are propping up the “niche” e-books market by buying books they may never read, according to the co-manager at Lagardère, owner of book publisher Hachette Livre.

I guess they think it still has a 'tech toy' status - which is true, to an extent. But I know avid readers, male and female, who use e-books, so I want to see the hard numbers first.

Oh, that is funny. I agree, I'd have to see hard numbers before I believed this.

So we're to believe that wealthy males are the ones buying up all that romance and erotica that makes up such a large part of the ebook market - all those books written primarily by and for women?

Why do I think I hear the hamstergods laughing?

I think that they are talking more about the expensive ebooks, the ones that most people on this forum complain about.

I took his comment to mean the European market where ebooks are 1% or less of total revenue. Higher prices may limit purchases to higher income individuals.

Sounds like the Kool-Aid tanks at Lagardère must be pretty substantial...

1% of total revenue and geographic restrictions lock the everyday (as in all the people who read books who aren't young male investment bankers) buyer out of 78% of the eBooks they'd like to buy.

It might have more to do with the ratio between ebooks that are in English, and ebooks that are in all other European languages. Just because I read books in English doesn't mean that everybody in my home country does the same.

Dominique D’Hinnin, Lagardère’s finance chief, told the Morgan Stanley TMT conference in Barcelona that while most paperback buyers were 50-something year old women of “average income”, e-book customers tended to be younger men, a more lucrative market.

“We don’t talk about the mass market yet. Most e-book buyers are males, 35 year old, with a lot of money. Basically it’s investment bankers,” Mr D’Hinnin said.
