Kindle for PC HELP!
I'm trying to download books for Kindle for PC, but I can't find the application on my computer. When I'm on Amazon, it shows me two options in the drop down menu, Kindle for PC and Kindle for PC 2, so it looks like I've mistakenly got two copies of the app on my hard drive, however I cannot find either.

When I loaded mine, it left a button on the desktop.
You should have a folder in your "programs" file that says "Amazon".....click on it. |

Can you click on the Start button (normally bottom left) on your PC screen and type kindle in the search box - it should find your Kindle for PC program for you.

Look on your Manage Your Kindle page - you've got 2 K4PC programs registered to your account - if one is a duplicate - unregister it on Amazon - which will leave one option in the drop-down menu when you buy books.
The K4PC program usually resides with the rest of your programs: C:\Program Files\Amazon\Kindle For PC |

Thanks poohbear.
I deregistered the Kindle for PC 2 on the Manage Your Kindle page. It turned out the software wasn't installed, but once I installed it and tried to register it kept calling itself "Kindle for PC 2". I'm not sure what all I did but finally got it straightened out. |

Now I remember why I stopped using Kindle for PC before. It uses some ghastly sub-pixel smoothing scheme which creates a colored fringe around the fonts that I cannot stand to look at. And there is no way to turn off the smoothing.

There are several other Windows readers for DRM-free AZW (MOBI) files. The Windows MobiPocket Reader is still good even though now moribund. FBReader works well with MOBI's, as does uBook.
Most Kindle ebooks have DRM (and some are TOPAZ which is harder to deal with). It is easy to strip AZW DRM using a stand-alone tool or a Calibre plug-in. If you go the Calibre route, Nook Study and Sony Reader Library are good Windows apps for ePubs (which Calibre can create from DRM-free MOBI). In the US the law isn't entirely clear but it is probably ok to strip DRM for your own use from ebooks you bought (e.g. to use an app without frizzy fonts). See Apprentice Alf's Blog and tools_v2.2a for more info on DRM. |

Are you talking about the icon to start it or the name of your computer inside the Kindle application?

If it is a Topaz format book then I don't think you can do much about the font. Its actually got individual pictures of the various letters/symbols in the book and then just displays those in the appropriate places on each page.

I can't see the subpixel rendering on my screen. I assume that it is actually the Kindle application doing it and not your OS as you'd be annoyed everywhere else if so.

Thank you, that is very helpful info. I tried all the PC eReader programs you mentioned. Both the Windows MobiPocket Reader and the Calibre E-book Viewer allow me to view text without any smoothing, which is great! Last edited by toronado; 11-23-2010 at 05:37 AM. |
