My first real issue with the K3

So is this normal? If I'm reading and I set the K3 down for a while, it goes to the screensaver. No problem, but lately it's been going to the Kindle Tree screen with the status bar. This is happening quite a lot, multiple times a day. This wouldn't be a problem except that when it's done it goes back to the home screen and if I haven't set a bookmark then I have to find my page from the last bookmark I set. The "Go to last page read" does not take me to the last page read when this happens.

For informational purposes I have the K3 wifi (with wifi off).

This happen to anyone else?

Have you upgraded your firmware to 3.0.3? Some Kindles with older firmware had the intermittent restart problems.

I was at 3.0.1 which surprised me since I only bought the K3 a month or so ago. Thanks for the assistance! We'll see if it works!

The Kindle tree with the status bar isn't the screensaver. Its the startup screen. If you're seeing that then the Kindle has crashed or restarted for some reason.

Do what daffy4u suggested and force an upgrade to 3.0.3. Amazon will eventually push it out to you but that may take a while. Kindle customer services will make you update to the latest firmware as the first thing you do anyway if you open a trouble ticket with them.

If you're still experiencing frequent crashes then you need to talk to Kindle CS and get them to investigate and maybe replace your Kindle. It isn't normal.

Right, I said it goes to the screensaver; then I said it ALSO goes to the Kindle Tree screen. Sorry if I was unclear, I know they are two different things. I did the firmware update after the initial suggestion so I'll see how that goes.

My first Kindle WiFi 3 resetted a half dozen times per day. Amazon replaced it with a new, prestested, one. Now I still get spontaneous resets about once per week.

I keep upgrading the firmware but that now seems standard. I believe it may be triggered by incorrect key sequences. If, by accident, I press too many wrong keys in haste it happens.

I'm up to 3.0.3 (536720111) at present.

I don't believe getting a new unit from Amazon will solve the problem anymore. I'll just live with the problem. I'll just have to do my keying more slowly. All software and hardware have native bugs. This one is just the major Kindle WiFi 3 bug.

That isn't normal. My 3G+WiFi doesn't spontaneously reset at all. At most it has happened 1-2 times ever but so infrequently that I can't tell you when it last happened or even how many times it has happened.

The Kindle 3G+WiFi and Kindle WiFi are pretty much the same unit. The difference is that the 3G+WiFi has a socket and a 3G modem card inside. The rest of the hardware and firmware are exactly the same.

My Kindle 3 has only rebooted on its own once while I've had it, so I wouldn't say spontaneous reboots were a normal factor of Kindle ownership, either. I was on 3.0.2 firmware at the time this reboot occurred, unlike many, I didn't have any problems with my Kindle when it had the 3.0.1 firmware, and it hasn't had any further crash and reboot problems, thus far, on 3.0.3.

If the problem continues with the latest firmware, Grimm, you certainly need to contact Amazon CS for a replacement.

And, as Tierstan stated, a weekly crash and reboot isn't normal, simaru; I don't think you should have to just live with it - perhaps you should contact Amazon CS again, too. Of course, that is totally up to you.

When others comment here, please indicate if its 3G OR WiFi and country. That makes a BIG difference. I believe Tiersten is from the UK and has the 3G unit.

If I see a lot of folks here commenting that they have the US Kindle WiFi and never had a reset problem, then I will call Amazon CS again and get my THIRD unit. Its also possible that early runs of the Kindle WiFi had the problem but recent runs have finally solved the issue.

Its not normal whatever model it is. It shouldn't randomly reboot if you've got the latest firmware and haven't modified it at all. Call Kindle CS and get them to look at it and possibly replace it.

You mentioned that it is rebooting once a week with your replacement Kindle. Unless you're completely running out the battery each time, it shouldn't ever do that. Its a fault with your Kindle if it does spontaneously reboot that frequently.

I wonder if your problem is similar to the issue with Kindle 2. There was a big batch of K2s (and a few other readers) with screens that would fade in sunlight. It took some people several Kindles before they got one that didn't fade. Most, like myself never had the sun fade problem at all.

Maybe there is a big batch of K3 WiFi units that are defective.

I wonder if it's not a loose battery connection? I mean, when you put it down it's sort of a sudden jolt.

Mine (Wifi) has never rebooted, not once since I got it (and what was when they first came out).

Some people back when the Kindle was released mentioned that their Kindle WiFi would rattle and that there was a bad batch. It appeared to be restricted to Kindle WiFi units as well.

Is the Kindle simply trying to UPDATE, but can't with WiFi off, try putting Wifi on see if it makes any difference, you can soon switch it back off !
