NYT 100 Notable Books of 2010

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/05/bo...general&src=me

If you prefer to skip straight to nonfiction, as I did, those start on Page 2.

I highly recommend

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/05/bo...shinsky-t.html

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/28/bo.../Becker-t.html

If you like the latter, I also highly recommend this book by the author's wife:

Thanks for posting. Even though I'm not a huge Rolling Stones fan, I'd love to read that Keith Richards book.

The list is put out too soon. 2010 is not over yet. There is still the month of December. That list needs to go away and be revised in January, 2011.

I'm much more a non-fiction reader, though Foreign Bodies and The Great House look interesting.

I did make my way through Christianity -- it's very thorough! Another library download was Changing My Mind -- as with essay collections, some were interesting, others not so much, but Smith can really write!
The Promise strayed into wonkery often, so I'd recommend it for political junkies only.

I have Country Driving on my "maybe" list (along with Travels in Siberia) -- I liked Hessler's River Town, but couldn't get into Oracle Bones at all.
I'm in the library hold queue for The Possessed, premise seems interesting so we'll see. Finally, one of these days I plan on listening to The Tenth Parallel.

I think the NYT gets advance copies of books. That kinda publicity helps publishers push books for the holidays.

Haven't read "Oracle Bones," but I liked "River Town" as well.

I'm tired of "Top 100" lists. Especially over a very narrow time period, like a year. 100 quality books don't come out every year, let alone enough to make a "Top" list out of.

I'd be convinced to read a book if it made it into a truly elite category, like Top 10 only or something.

Very true. As soon as I saw one of Stieg Larrson's books on there (The Girl That...can't remember) I knew that not all the books were worthwhile, even though the book itself was just ok.

To each his own. When I'm tired of something, I generally avoid threads that are clearly labeled with those topics.

Since you're sharing: I'm tired of reading about others' complaints, lol.
