Wireless on 950?
Is the wireless on the 950 JUST for the Sony store or can you use it to browse or download from other locations?
Thanks! |

3G only connects to the Sony Store, not general web browsing.
WiFi can be used for browsing, but probably best for brief look ups, etc., in my opinion. I have not downloaded the new firmware, so I am not sure about current WiFi downloading capabilities. I am sure someone will be along shortly with more details. |

You can download from the Sony Store over 3G & Wi-fi. You can also download from Google Books over Wi-fi. Unfortunately you cannot download from any other sources. I wish the 950 browser had this capability too.
You can use the browser over Wi-fi at most internet sites. |

Hi Bookworm_Girl, are you sure you can download from Google Books over Wi-Fi to the prs 950? I want to get either the 650 or the 950 and if this is true I would go for the 950.
I live in Europe but American friends would bring it with them at the beginning of January. |

But, the device only has access to the free classic/public domain Google Books. If you buy books or want to download samples (I tried) from the Google Bookstore, then you'll have to transfer them to the reader via USB. |

I would caution that access to Google Books via Wi-fi on the 950 is through the Sony Reader Store. You have to be logged into your Sony Reader Store account. I am not sure if these feature work for somebody who does not have a Sony Reader Store US account? Better for somebody else who is overseas to comment. But, as trekchick states, you can "sideload" ebooks that you have downloaded from the internet to your computer hard-drive by connecting a USB cable to the 950. You can also sideload ebooks the same way to the 650.
If you don't need the bigger 7" screen and don't really plan to use the internet browser, then maybe the 650 is a better option for you. Hope that helps! |
