When you open, say, an HTML file in BD, it uses Word to convert that file into RTF. I believe that this message means that it failed to find "Word". Do you have it on your computer?

Of course I have word! In fact it was working on that very machine previously! I have no idea what happened. I reinstalled all of BookDesigner with current update and no good.

It works on all my other machine..so I am not completely out of luck, but I would love to know how to fix it.

I am having the same error message--but I don't use Word, I use OpenOffice, so the error message makes sense. But I have no intention of giving Microsoft any more of my money. Does anyone know a workaround to get Book designer to work with OpenOffice?

Thanks!

Unfortunately OO cannot pre-process properly many types of MS Word docs, for this reason BD uses Word libraries.

But you can try to use the inner BD pre-processor as follows.
1. Open your input file in OO and convert it to html.
2. BD -> Settings:
re-format completely: checked;
keep pictures: checked;
keep styles: checked.
3. Load html to BD.

Because the inner BD pre-processor is not so powerful as the Word's one, some formatting errors may appear. To check and fix them do as follows after the file loading:
1. Tools -> Html Fragment Editor
2. fragment: check "whole code"
3. if there are formatting errors (they will be reported at the status bar) - fix them manually and press "apply".

I assume you were asking me if Word is in use when I get the error message. The answer is no.

I have MS Word 2003 installed. When I try to convert on this particular machine using BookDesigner it fails with the error message - see above.

I note that it begins the conversion, going so far as getting the embedded cover graphic, but then it fails.

What should I check regarding my Word installation? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what BD checks for the conversion process, but vvv stated that it uses some of Word's libraries, perhaps M$ pushed a recent update down to Word that "fixed" something. I'd try a MS Office/Word -> Detect & Repair operation to see if that fixes anything. Worst case scenario is your computer wastes ~5 minutes and nothing is found, best case is it might fix the problem.

BTW I received that error message the first time I ran BD. I wasn't aware it required Word to run and I was trying to convert a LIT. Would be nice if BD threw a more detailed message to help troubleshoot where it hangs; e.g., Word not installed, problem accessing [such and such].dll, etc.
