Can't go into Upgrade Mode

I've been attempting to do the firmware upgrade, and I'm at the stage in which I need to put my Kobo into Upgrade Mode. However, my Kobo will not go into Upgrade Mode. I'm following the instructions exactly as it states. When I press the buttons at the same time, the red light comes on, but when I release the buttons, the light goes off and the screen still has a cover image.

I really want to get this firmware update. I had a problem a couple months ago in which the Kobo software couldn't connect to the internet (even though I was clearly on the internet). I was excited to see that that issue had been fixed, but now I'm angry that I can't get my Kobo into Upgrade Mode.

If I can't get this update working, I'm tempted to buy another type of e-reader. This is ridiculous. An update shouldn't be this complicated.

Can someone help me make my Kobo work properly?

You need to hold the center of dPAD until five squares appear. You can release the power button as soon as the reader starts to turn on. Michael Tamblyn, the Kobo VP of Content sales and merchandising wrote an update guide for 1.4 here on the MR site.
