Best ebook reader for the price for what I want
I don't really need the newest thing out there unless its some kind of godsend. My big concerns are reading manga and using it for my role-playing books (so i don't have to carry 20+ pounds when I go gaming).
I do have somewhat bad eyes and need to have things closer to me in order to read, but eyestrain has never been an issue for me. Basically I can't read small fonts like 10pt and some 12pt easily. I also would likely be reading a lot more in the dark, such as on trips, than outdoors or in brightly lit places. I'm not sure how bright you need it to be for some ereaders without backlights. Color would be nice, but it isn't a make-or-break item....mostly my ability to read manga easily in almost any lighting condition and with a decent battery life. I would prefer a responsive touch-screen interface as opposed to buttons since there's a good chance I will need to zoom in/out in for reading text and then to see images fullscreen my experiences with my modded PSP aren't exactly the best. Well, the best device for you would probably be the nook color ($250). You get a capacitive touchscreen with pinch zoom, color, backlight, and great PDF support + EPUB. If you want eink with a touchscreen you probably should go with either the Sony 650 ($230) or 950 ($300), depending on your budget. The Sony models have an excellent touchscreen with a great pearl eink display.

I dunno, unless you are playing Classic Traveller or white box D&D, you will want a e-reader that can display the whole page of RPG book from the PDF. So a full sized tablet is likely what you are after. I'm not sure there are any decent ones out yet besides the iPad, though there are a host of Android ones on the way.
But if you don't need full size, Nook Color seems to be the way to go. |

The ipad is of course the best option if you need a big screen. The Archos 101 (hopefully shipping any day now) is the next best option at $300.

While I admit they make some great items, I don't want an ipad because I don't want to support the very restrictive proprietary nature of Apple. That's a personal decision on how I'm voting for my wallet. In addition they also cost more for the same functions as a google or MS product.
Is the Archos the same size as the iPad for my gaming needs? |
