What is wrong with Stanza?

It flatly refuses to admit that books I've synced to my iTouch exist, and their website offers virtually no help (they can't even manage to correctly link the download for the desktop software).

I've had to (reluctantly) install iBooks to be able to read anything other than Alice in Wonderland or the not-very-helpful quick start manual.

What method are you using to add books to Stanza? When you say, "books I've synced to my iTouch" I imagine you adding books via iTunes. If I add books via iTunes, it's always to get those books into iBooks. When adding books to Stanza, I almost always use either Calibre or Stanza's desktop application to facilitate adding the books over wifi.

At this point, the books now exist on the device, and while I have plenty of storage, I'd rather not waste it on unnecessary duplication by importing everything again by WiFi.

Again, how do I get Stanza to admit to the existence of files ON THE DEVICE, or is it just not good enough software to do that?

Seanette, I feel your pain. I blew an entire evening dragging-and-dropping non-DRMed ePubs into the Stanza app in iTunes using the directions on the Stanza website. When I tried to access the files on my iPod Touch the app complained it couldn't find the ebooks on some website on the internet. I never did find the download for the desktop app on their website, either. I can stuff non-DRMed ePubs into the Kobo and iBooks apps without a hiccup, though, so I guess I really don't need Stanza.

Again, what method are you using to import the books? The iPad does not allow you to share files between programs, unfortunately. If you have added an ebook to iBooks, that's the app that can access it. Adding a book via wifi shouldn't create two copies of the book on your device. It's just an alternative method of adding the book.

I'm not USING an iPad (see info block), and how exactly does downloading a second instance of the same file NOT result in duplication? I tried Calibre-to-iTunes, which insisted the book had made the trip, but Stanza just stuck its bits in its bytes and refused to acknowledge anything.

At this point, I'm inclined to stick with iBooks, since it actually works.

Seanette,
Rob_e is trying to help you. Can you tell him how you sync your books? If you want to send book to Stanza, just use Calibre instead and delete those books in iBook. If you sync your book from calibre to itunes, then sync to your itouch, it will always go to iBooks.

With the iPod touch connected to iTunes you will see it in the device section on the left hand side of the iTunes window.

Click on the iPod touch and then select "Apps" which is to the right of "Summary" near the top of the window.

Once you have selected "Apps" scroll down you will see a heading called "File Sharing" and there will be a list of applications that can transfer files to your iPod touch through USB.

Select Stanza and on the right hand side of the window will be an "Add" button, click this button then navigate to where your files are stored on your computer and iTunes will add these books to your iPod touch for use in Stanza.

This list will contain all other apps that can do the same thing with whatever media they are meant to handle.

I *DID* state the process I was using, TYVM! In fact, if anyone bothers to actually READ anything I've said, you'll see I've tried at least two routes, NEITHER of which worked despite information I'd googled.

At this point, I'm out of this thread and you boys can sneer at and patronize each other to your hearts' content. I've solved the problem, by switching to an app that WORKS. There is no need to continue condescending and talking down.

Seanette:

clockworkzombie got it right. If you follow his directions, you'll be able to place your documents into Stanza.

I had similar frustrations until I did like he said.

Best Wishes

What's wrong with iBooks. I prefer it to stanza. I didn't like the way stanza looked and I had trouble getting books on there too.

There are a number of threads on why some people might prefer one or the other. Of course if you're happy with iBooks, there's no need to worry about it. Ironically, one of the things I like about Stanza is the variety of ways you can add books to it. I've added books through iTunes, over wifi, and from websites. With iBooks the only way I've found to add books is through iTunes (or buy them through the iBookstore). There may be other ways as well, but since I also prefer other aspects of Stanza, so I haven't delved that deeply into iBooks.

Hopefully Seanette is also happy with iBooks, too. I mistakenly thought this thread was a request for help, but I think it was just a rant. Lots of people like Stanza, and if anyone wants help making it work for them, there are probably plenty of people here with advice. But if you have a solution that works for you, that's great, too. There are lots of people who prefer iBooks as well.

Probably best for the OP to stay away from an app they can't figure out. Stanza is certainly my favourite ebook reader for iOS and works exactly as advertized.

What a jerk. This is not some PAID support forum. You are being an imbecile. We all read what you wrote, you aren't listening to what people told you.

iOS does NOT ALLOW different apps to share the same files. This is not a Stanza issue. If you've loaded your books into iBooks, but want to read them with any other software -- you are SOL. Nothing you can do about that.

If you DON'T want to read your books in iBooks, then delete them from iBooks. Loading books into Stanza is Stanza's strength. You've been given instructions on what to do. There is no problem with Stanza in this regard.

Of course, the iBooks app is a nice reader. Since your books are in iBooks already, just go ahead and read them there and be happy.
