Are You an Obsessive/Compulsive Reader?

Is every free moment in your life spent reading? Is your TBR pile bigger than your expected lifespan is long? Would you rather be reading right now?
If you said yes, here's a question for you:
Before you became an Obsessive/Compulsive Reader, did you have other obsessions? Hobbies? Collections?
Do you still?
Has reading satisfied your need?

It started with reading the boxes of cereal and the bottom of tissue boxes as a child, and it's been downhill ever since.

I have enough TBR p-books to last me for decades, and my e-books will require me to make a run for the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest human being. My eyes have already been retooled with artificial lenses, set so that I need glasses for distance instead of close-up (allowing me to read without glasses now). Soon the number of boxes of books in my home will outnumber the pieces of furniture (I never throw out or give away books). I would rather buy books than shoes or clothing, making me an aberration to my gender.

I can't say that I'm obsessive to that extent about anything else. There are certain things that I have collections of, but I stopped buying them when I ran out of display space for them. I picked up pieces that intrigued me but always with the thought in the back of my head as to where I was going to put them. There is no such thought in my mind when I walk into a bookstore.

I tune out the world when I read, and I read whenever I have a free moment. I will make free moments whenever I'm supposed to be doing something else.

Yep, that.

Is it obsessive to read whilst brushing teeth, combing hair, taking out contacts (little tricky, that one), cooking, vacuuming, watching TV, eating, basically "being?" If there's print in my environment, it's read. By me.

Same here... I also have a very hard time not reading the billboards, while driving.. I think those boards are dangerous.

I'm obsessive in the way that I have to read the whole book, including copyright notice, acknowledgments and bibliography

We have no billboards here. It's a law I think? When I went back to the mainland this past summer, my kids were amazed: "mom! why are there posters on the side of the road??" And some are so far off the road, they are dangerous (because I, too, read every single one!)

Is every free moment in your life spent reading?
Nope, but every free moment when I have nothing else at hand is...

Is your TBR pile bigger than your expected lifespan is long?
Yep and still growing

Would you rather be reading right now?
Today, no, tomorrow, probably yes. I want to go home and look at my kitchen today...

Before you became an Obsessive/Compulsive Reader, did you have other obsessions? Hobbies? Collections?
Do you still?

I collect still! Books!

Beside that, I still play computer games, watch movies, series, bake pies...

Are You an Obsessive/Compulsive Reader?

Yup

Is every free moment in your life spent reading?

Not quite, but I have been known to try (and often succeed at) combining other hobbies with reading. Knitting & cooking work well, gardening less so, jewellery making and sewing - not so well!

Is your TBR pile bigger than your expected lifespan is long?

Yes. To the point I've stopped referring to it as that and treat buying books and reading books as two seperate hobbies.

Would you rather be reading right now?

Yes.

If you said yes, here's a question for you:
Before you became an Obsessive/Compulsive Reader, did you have other obsessions? Hobbies? Collections?

No - my other hobbies (except, possibly, drawing and walking/sodding off outside for a day) came after. Some obsessions are just short term, and are more about information gathering and research than the actual object of the obsession (so I suppose, really, research is the real obsession here)

Actually, I think I became an obsessive/compulsive reader from the moment I learnt to read. I don't remember a time when I wasn't reading anything I could lay my hands on

Do you still?

I have too many hobbies. When I don't know what to do, or don't feel like doing any of them, reading is the default.

Has reading satisfied your need?

It's satisfied my need to read

I got my reader so I could take it with me more easily and so that I would never run out of things to read!

I can't sit on the couch without a book in hand, even if I'm not actually reading it at the time!

So very cleverly phrased - and so very true for me since I got my Kindle 3 years ago. I should add that cataloging the books in Calibre is also a hobby.

Absolutely!!

Hobbies come and go with me, but in the end. . .I would rather be reading, or making ebooks from my huge collection of paperbacks.

I'll walk through the house with at least one reader in my hands, sometimes two, rarely three. Right now, at work, I have two dedicated readers and my PDA with book (which was my original reader) with me.

I have my reader with me all the time, with very few exceptions.

I don't like "not knowing" and a lot of my reading is pedagogical in nature (economics, finances, knowledge management etc)

I guess I feel like I don't know much and have a lot of catching up to do.

Given a choice, I'd rather be reading. I never watch TV (I'm proud to say that I am one of the 7% of Americans who do not watch TV) and I spend all my available free time reading. My TBR pile is probably 300-400 books and grows weekly. I subscribe to a lot of magazines and every few weeks I have to dedicate a week to reading nothing but the magazines or I'd be drowning in the stacks -- and that's even with my reading of The Economist, Businessweek, and The New York Review of Books faithfully as they arrive!
