I am in the process of picking up a Libre Pro, and have heard numerous things about jetbook vs LP firmware. Can these be interchanged, and if so, which is the best one, in your experience? Do you find any other differences between the JB or LP?

Well I'm looking at it from the Jetbook side.
In my opinion, even though the hardware is the same, the software from what I've seen is not. I'm not aware of many people who have started with a Libre who managed to successfully load Jetbook firmware on their device. But, exactly which one is best for you, that can be a tough question. Its going to come down to exactly which options are the most important for you. |

You might want to consider that for the most part you can include the Jetbook Lite as
a device that offers a very similar reading experience. All three devices have a number of features that they share and things that differentiate between them. There are others that can address the benefits of the Jetbook and the Libre Pro. So, I will try to point out those things that would suggest the Jetbook Lite. 1. It runs on user replaceable AA Batteries, so there is no need to wait for the recharging of an internal battery. 2. The current firmware supports three of the most common DRM scams, ADE epub&pdf, Secure eReader pdb, and B&N epub. 3. It does not waste resources pretending to be an MP3 player. Other than that, all three devices provide the same ebook display capabilities and all are subject to the vagaries of the reading programs included in each firmware issued. (I really like the results from the reading programs included in the 0.16e version of the JBL's firmware.) Luck; Ken |

So, would most of you prefer the jetbook, whether in lite or jb5 form, over the libre?

Jakie, it's my impression that currently Ectaco is ahead of Aluratek in the firmware race.

The Aluratek Libre has a serif and a sans serif font whereas the Jetbook and Jetbook Lite have two sans serif fonts. I prefer a serif font.

fonts as built in fonts, the 0.16e firmware of the Jetbook Lite with the Adobe Reader Mobile supports embedded fonts in .epubs and you could always use .pdf with whatever fonts you wanted to make a .pdf page image. Luck; Ken |

IMHO although the mp3 player in my Libre is rather primitive compared to most other dedicated music devices out there, it does serve a purpose. Sometimes my eyes get tired and I do not want to read, I can listen to my loaded music and I can even load an audiobook on the SD card and listen to that instead. When you pause the music file it remembers the place. My local library stocks the latest titles in audiobook so it widens the selection available to me. Just my opinion.
I am looking for a jetbook for the dictionaries but right now it seems to be at least $30 more than the $100 price of the libre on borders. |

Pete, might I suggest you check out ebay? They have them on there every now and again. I can't attest to the usual price for a jetbook, but I saw a libre sell yesterday for $56 plus $13 shipping. Man, I really should have bought that one.

The dictionary part of the JB and JBL is over rated. I have found that it lacks a majority of the words that I look up. Basic english is ok. If you need other languages then it probably would work for you.
I would have preferred that they strengthen the English dictionary and drop the other languages or at least offer that option as a FW upgrade. (but Ectaco is a language translation tools company). Something else worth mentioning - the Dictionary is not available for use in ePub and PDF documents on the JB(L)'s. It is available in all the other formats. Currently w/re to ePub docs the ALP cannot use the <> keys to do paging where as the JB and JBL can. This can be convenient for those that want to use their right hand to change pages while holding the device. John Last edited by jlg432; 10-31-2010 at 11:51 AM. |

Here is something else that I like about both the JB(L) and the ALP.
When I find an article that on the Internet that I would like to keep for reference I like to Cut and paste them into MS Word or Open office and then save the artical as an HTML doc. This also captures whatever pictures are included in the article. You can then read these on your reader and it appears just like it did Online. John |

The HTML support that the JBL has is actually pretty good considering the hardware
limitations of a pocketable device and that it is black and white. I find that it makes large manuals (over 20MB) quite practical. It is a simple matter to have a folder on an SD card for the JBL dedicated to such a manual with all the files and subfolders for the ebook/manual. Luck; Ken |
