Making an iPad slip case - a diary

I've got a bit fed up with the case on my ipad - the Apple one - as it traps crumbs and things between the case and the device. I've seen a few cases I like but they either have the same problem (case goes onto the front of the ipad), or they're not available in the UK and aren't quite nice enough to justify the cost of buying from the US. So I'm going to make a slip case. The plan is to knit it, then felt it - so far I've bought the yarn, knitted up a swatch and plan on felting it tomorrow.

A DIY-thread would be cool. Once you finished you could post the results here and for further "how-to" information, you could put an instructable at instructables.com (step by step with pictures). That would be cool.

I have made a book-style case for on the go and a wooden slipcase which I published here:

Awesome to see others DIYing

Whatever you knit, make sure it doesn't produce too much static electricity.. After all, electrical components doesn't like those things.

Since the entire back plate of the iPad is aluminum, stray static buildups will simply ground out across it. So I don't think that will be a big problem.

I learn something new each day!

But, are you sure it doesn't affect the screen? I believe it works on changes in electrical current, if I'm not 100% mistaken.

I may line the case to be on the safe side

I was thinking of putting a piece of card between the lining and the outer to give extra protection to the screen, but that will rather add to the bulk (the swatch has felted up to be about 6mm thick. The second swatch, using different wool, is thinner, but hasn't felted as well)

I'd be weary of using wool as a protection since I used it as a mild abrasive when doing polishing on furniture. Cardboard without a paper face is also abrasive. Some felts can also be abrasive. The best material should be cotton...

Best yet, use microfiber cloth it will clean your screen at the same time...

wanted to get this one but I got another made out of neoprene. If I had the choice then I would have had bought this one. Perhaps this will be better and save you some work. In reality I prefer to use my iPad completely naked (better cooling) and anyways I flip it around (case is useless).

I'll almost certainly line it with cotton
