Hi, I've just joined here. I have had a Kindle since February and love it. However, it does not allow one to download library books. Since I live in rural Alabama, that has not mattered to me until recently.
After reading that I could get a library card from the Free Library of Philadelphia (not free, but cheap if you're out of state), I did that for the sole purpose of checking out audio books to listen to on my Zune. So, after being thrilled about that and doing that since last Thursday (4 days), now I'm thinking about buying a Sony Pocket Reader--the cheapest one--only for library books. I played with a more expensive Sony at best buy and it seems that I can only purchase the cheaper one online. However, the online descriptions don't answer certain questions for me. So, if anyone has this product, I do have some questions. |

Hi Dixiemsala and welcome to MobileRead. I've got the Sony 505 and routinely borrow books from my local library. In fact, I borrowed one from them while on a flight from Baltimore to Dallas, TX the other day

Personally I have absolutely nothing against the Sony PRS ereaders, except I don't want to pay that much for an ereader. One day I will be able to get a touch screen reader for what I want to pay for it $100.

Good to have your company, Dixie. Yup, a big problem is that Kindle can read only its own Mobi files and most libraries loan ePub or PDF. And they carry DRM, so you can't legally convert them to Mobi for your machine. Moving to Sony ain't a bad idea in your position. Good luck and best wishes. Neil

Hi! What part of rural Ala? The Jeffco library system recently added ebooks, but had audiobooks for a year or two. Epubs only.

Geoff, I don't have a local library with Overdrive or anything similiar. I just recently got a library card from the Free Library of Philadelphia ($15/yr for non-Pennsylvania residents). I feel as though I've died and gone to heaven. I just got it last week and downloaded audio books to my Zune. Today I bought a Sony ereader and downloaded my first library book.

DixieGal, I live in Dothan. However, after retiring in June (and my husband planning to), we are still trying to sell our house in order to move to Tupelo, MS.
