eReader Holiday Price Predictions

I'm looking to buy an eReader over the next two months and would like to take advantage of Black Friday or Christmas sales. What do others forecast will happen to the prices of the Sony 6" Touch, Kobo or Kindle in particular? I would buy the Sony if the price approaches the Kindle, or a Kobo wireless at $99.

I don't know what is in the near future for sales but I doubt you will see the PRS-650 approach Kindle prices any time soon.

They recently had a promotion where they threw in a free book cover/light. I would expect the price to drop around the end of the year but again, not anywhere near the Kindle price. I bet Amazon is selling hardware at a loss just to get you hooked on their books. Sony has stated that they will not try to compete on costs. They are banking on their quality to be the deciding factor.

Maybe a $99 Kindle on Black Friday to dissuade people from buying the Nook Color.

If Amazon would sell a kindle for that price I would buy it. It would go a long way to fixing the problems with my Libra Pro - no touch screen and its rather slow.

If one seller drops the price then the others will follow. I would be surprised if Amazon was the first to drop its price, the Kindle is already at the low end of the scale. Sony will not drop its price.

I would guess that the best thing to do would be buy an e-reader at a store that is giving away store wide discounts.

What I am hoping will hapen is that Borders and Aluratek will do a better job of marketing and attract a lot more attention putting pressure on Amazon and Sony to drop their prices.

For the record - personaly I could care less about who makes the ereader as long as I get my price. At the moment Aluratek and Borders are the only ones willing to meet my price.

Barnes and Noble have no reason to drop their price on the Classic Nook, that would undercut the Nook Color. Sony hasn't figured out that they would sell more e-readers if they dropped their price over the course of the last two years, I doubt that they will change their position now.

Borders just introduced the Kobo 2 priced at $149. I would be surprised to see a price drop there. Given that the Kobo 1 at $99 seemed not to affect the price of the Nook or Kindle, I doubt that a price cut in the Kobo 2 is going to have much impact.

No one in the mainstream market knows about the Aluratek. At least, in the US, very few people know who or what they are. I doubt anything they do will phase Amazon.

I'm talking about a 6-hour sale; not a price drop.

Regardless, I intend to buy two readers - Nook Color and eInk. If there's a $99 Kindle, I'll get it. Otherwise, I'll probably just get a used Sony 300. At this stage of the game, I will not spend more than $99 on an eInk reader.

That's why Amazon should sell the K3 for $99 on BF.

I think a very small percentage of people who want to buy a K3 are going to be interested in a Nook Color. The price difference is already large enough and most people looking at the Kindle want e-ink not an LCD screen.

K3 sold out in under a week. Has the Nook Color sold out yet?

Nook Color is a tablet with the capability of reading all book formats. You won't be locked into ePub. It'll be sporting a Kindle for Android app in no time.

Out of curiosity, why does your price difference argument only apply to the Kindle and not the Nook? If people looking at a Kindle want eInk, then so do people looking at a Nook.

B&N is going to focus on selling the Nook Color this holiday season. Someone looking at a Nook is likely to see the Nook Color at B&N and might be interested in it only because they see it at the store. Someone looking at a Kindle is likely to go to Amazon.com and not see the Nook, Nook Color, or Sony and buy the Kindle. There is no room for an impulse buy on Amazon's website which is different from a B&N store.

I have said my piece on the Nook Color in plenty of topics, no need to kick a dead horse.

"Dear, can I get a Nook Color instead?"

"How much extra is it?"

"Just a $100."

"Only $100? Well dang, get it. $100 is nothing. In fact, let's get two."

Assuming you meant that you would be replace your Libra with a Kindle, I can see how that would take care of the slowness (Though, maybe you could look at the original Jetbook if you otherwise like the Libra, since I never found it to be slow.). The Kindle doesn't have a touchscreen though...

Considering that Amazon is selling Kindles like gang busters at the moment, I don't really expect to see a sale on them at Christmas (in fact, I suspect they might be a rather hot gift for gadget fans, since they are relatively cheap compared to most gadgets already). I could see a sale on the Sony, the Kobo and maybe the Nook as well.. though I think that with the exception of the Kobo, looking at $100 is probably a bit unrealistic. I also expect sales on other readers, particularly the Pandigital readers, the Jetbook readers, etc.
