PRS-300 Can't increase font on PDF

I always seem to have problems when I increase the font on a PDF (and it always seems to be necessary) but this one is new to me -- when I increase the font the bottom of the screen states S to M to L as I toggle through the sizes but the font size doesn't change. After a few toggles the device will freeze and I have to hit the reset to get it working again.

Does anyone know why this happens or how to work around it?

The PDF file may be a scanned image, not text.

I hope not, it is a review copy from the publisher! Well, actually from the author who got it from the publisher. Of course, I asked for epub format but they sent me a pdf instead and "assumed" it would be what I required...gah!

Here is another piece of the puzzle. If I view it in Reader Library on my PC, the font size changes just fine.

Ask for ePub again and tell them the PDF just won't do.

I did and I'm waiting for a reply, but in the meantime just thought I'd try to see if anyone knew why this was happening. Maybe it is just my ereader since it works okay in Reader Library.

I don't know why publishers always want to push pdf format on reviewers. Why not just offer the format the reviewer needs? Oh well, go figure.

Maybe try to convert it to EPUB in Calibre?

The one review copy I've read, I got a mobi and it converted very well to Epub.

I've thought about trying that, but I think that will be another question for the calibre forum, lol! I have an older version of calibre and I think I need to delete it first then reload the new version (which I'm scared to do--will I lose all my book data?) Then I have to figure out how to use the conversion utility. I'd rather just have the publisher send the file

Latest development -- I told the author I need epub and to please request an epub file from the publisher, so she sends me an html file because it is the only other file type she had.
