Yes. Yes, they do. They know where you download every illegal ebook from, and using GPS, they can actually spot where you are, and send in the police \ army \ reality TV cops.
Just don't do it. Illegal ebook downloading can kill. Or at the very least, get you lodged in a cell with a large, tattooed man that wants to call you his 'sweetie-pie'. Last edited by reech; 10-26-2010 at 04:08 PM. |

Let me make this crystal clear: I do not engage in illegal downloading (piracy). My question was regarding LEGALLY purchased/obtained books and/or documents that I have emailed to the Kindle from Calibre using my Kindle email. I found the answers to my question (in this forum), so I deleted it. |

I am sorry - I didn't mean to suggest you were - I was just suggesting that Amazon do know what people do - hell, it's bound to stop people asking about that, sooner or later...

I think it's just that the forums's been flooded with vaguely-veiled intimations to this.
Amazon just don't care, to be honest, I'd think. It's more hassle for them to check this. And really, with book-buying being one of the fantastic draws of this device, with the excellent tie-in to the Amazon store, the Kindle is designed to get people to consume stuff quickly and often. It appears to be working; I've already bought more books in the first month than I did in the first 4 when I had my Sony eReader. I have nothing to hide, so I'm happy for Amazon to look at the device. I mean, what are they going to do with my reading habbits? More effectively market things to me? Fine. Find out which books I read, and offer me deals on them? Also fine. Call on my doortstep on my birthday with a cake? Creepy - but fine. Glad you got your real query sorted out, and thanks for being patient with me! |

No, of course not. Just in one of those ornery mood today. Good thing I'm off for a few days, or pity my patients. Instead my kiddos have to suffer my sarcasm.
I'll try to limit my postings here until I return to some measure of normal human behavior -- or maybe I'll go back to reading my Kindle and leave everyone in peace! |

There's been how many millions of Kindles sold over the last few years? I supposed there ARE people out there that think Amazon would waste their time tracking what's on THEIR particular Kindle.
I loved your post reech. We could use a little more humor around here! |

K, they could conceivably upload what you've put on there (it would cost them data rates) why would they bother?
They could reduce these rates with MD5 sums or some similar method (but these will change because people convert, and each conversion method yields different sums) Do they even have a legal right to invade your privacy of what you put/store on the device (your personal documents) IDK read the TOS. How can they tell that you didn't buy a novel in a different format and sideload it to USB? There is no way to know that a converted EPUB to mobi you purchased legally is not an illegally downloaded book. Bottom line - amazon could care less about piracy if they are making $$ |

Don't have the link but today a Federal Judge determined that a state was NOT entitled records showing your purchases from Amazon. The underlying issue, was, I believe, sales tax collections but it sounds (summary paragraph) as if that state was over-reaching. It was North Caroline (local tv JUST mentioned it in a quick sound bite).
I know Amazon is trying to help me but occasionally I do get the willies when I enter their link and I'm greeted by first name and they have suggestions for me. |

Apparently I am more concerned about privacy than most members here.
I can easily imagine a government somewhere which would order Amazon to produce the names of all of its citizens/residents who ordered The Turner Diaries or Mein Kampf. Under a court order, would not Amazon be compelled to comply? |
