Language and Technology

This story appeared in the Yahoo news:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101223/...rokee_language

An interesting article with implications on language, technology, and culture.

Apparently, Sequoyah was the man who created the Cherokee alphabet in the early 1800s, giving them a written language as well. I hope we see some Cherokee language ebooks in the future.

Which brings up the question, do any other American Indian nations have an alphabet? I simply don't know.

Are native Hawaiians "American Indians"? They are indigenous people of a US State, and the Hawaiian language has its own alphabet. It even has a letter that was not borrowed from the English. The “`”, also called the glottal stop or ʻOkina, is pronounced as a catching of the breath; usually as a consonant between two vowels, forcing each vowel to be pronounce independently.

In addition to Cherokee, there are Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and extensions pages in the Unicode character set. The UCAS covers at least the Cree, Ojibwe and Inuktitut languages. There are even free fonts available for the UCAS syllabics.

Lots of languages use glottal stops. The easiest way to get one for an English speaker is to say the word "bookkeeper" - the glottal stop is the catching of the breath between the two "k"s.

Interesting! I think what's cool about the Cherokee alphabet is that it was created by a Cherokee and not a European linguist. I wonder if being created by someone from outside the culture causes distortions in the culture of the target audience.
