Red face Kobo and Ottawa Public Library

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone in the Ottawa area had been able to 'borrow' books from the Ottawa Public Library via the Kobo wireless reader? If so, can you share your experience?

Thank you,

Doug!

yes, and it was relatively painless. The only thing that threw me was the file that gets downloaded needs to be added to the Adobe management software that you can get from the library site. If I'm right, it's on the kobo as well.. but in any case, it worked rather well.

I think you did the borrowing though from your PC and then transferred the file to the Wireless Kobo; I don't believe you can actually borrow from the Kobo directly.

sorry, I meant that I believe that the adobe management software was also on the kobo; at least it had been with the first version of the kobo, I'm not sure about the wi-fi.

No problems here. I have borrowed a few books and was able to transfer them quite easily using ADE. I have the Kobo 1st Gen.

I'm not anywhere near Ottawa, but it looks like the OPL uses the same software that my library uses, OverDrive. It's certainly compatible with the kobo (http://www.overdrive.com/resources/d...okdevices.aspx). Yes, you have to download Adobe Digital Editions to your home computer (http://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/mai...ownload/ebooks), then you borrow the books from the library with your library card, download them to your computer, then transfer them to the kobo. Unfortunately, it only works from your own computer; library public-access machines won't let you download ADE. There's also no way to access Overdrive from the Kobo WiFi, because it's only set to accessing the kobo store.
So, yes, borrowing library books to read on the kobo is quite painless, so long as you have your own computer to do it from.

I use the Ottawa Public Library frequently. Managing waiting lists is difficult, but the selection is half decent.

note: You can use the web site to purchase books and download the ePub from Kobo, and open the .acsm file in ADE. You can manage your Kobo library using only ADE. (The Kobo may "force" you to load the desktop software but you don't have to run it)
