Question Reading on a plane?

Morning all,

In a few weeks I am going on holiday. Normally, with a normal book, I get into my seat, open my book and I am happy for the flight. With the e-book, will I be able to do this?

What do others do when the 'prepare for take-off/landing' announcement comes on about putting away all electronic devices. I guess the e-book counts?

Has anybody tried to carry on reading, been challenged, etc? I cant see how a static or even updated page could in any way interfere with the planes systems'.

Its just, there is such a long time between the announcements and the seatbelt light going off, sometimes 40 minutes or so, with nothing to do other than to read the sales magazines.

I still carry one physical book/newspaper/magazine in my carry-on baggage for the take-off/landing periods.

There is usually a separate announcement about "now safe for electronic devices" soon after take off.

The basic rule is: if it has an off switch turn it off.

Hi

I have made a small plane trip last June (Lisbon - Madrid, 600 kms) and had no chalenge at all, just voluntary closed the reader in the taking off and landing parts (good time to check the outragious prices they charge in their flight magazine), read the rest of the time.

Early on I sometimes used to turn the book off but, now, I generally leave it on and keep reading. I have never been challenged or asked to turn it off.

Last time I flyed my PSP I was asked to shut it down during the landing.
Same happened time ago with my Nuvi 200.

Since the reader is no more "on" when the screen is displaying text than when it is not, I've stopped bothering to turn it off. I've flown probably a dozen times this year, maybe more, and not been asked to turn it off. Sometimes I'm already reading a magazine or something so I read that until after takeoff, but if I'm using the reader when they make the electronics announcement I don't generally bother to turn it off.
I have a friend who doesn't even bother to turn off her cell phone, she's even sent and received text messages during landing. She said a pilot told her it doesn't do any harm.

Most times when I have been using it one of the cabin crew asks me to turn it off and I do - even if we know it doesnt make a real difference.

I fly a LOT long haul UK-Asia and haven't detected any real pattern in any of the airlines I use - seems to be individual cabin crew determination.

Reading the regulations, the advise notes, and other published information (see section 6 of http://ntl.bts.gov/DOCS/91-21_1.html as an example), it appears that the use of almost ANY electronic device including a hand-held calculator is prohibited by all international cariers not only on the (foolish) grounds of interferance, but also in case items get loose and bounce around.

I imagine a 505 in the back of the head could be fairly nasty. But then, would it be any worse than say the latest Stephen King book in hardback?

Yes, I just love people that think the rules don't apply to them. Does your friend take up two parking spaces, park in handicapped spots, not wait in line because she has a "quick question", etc.?

Is that 10 minutes you can't use electronic devices and you have wait to use your reader or cell phone really going to kill you?

Hear hear, Bob! I agree entirely.

Whether you agree or disagree with the rules and regulations, and whether you think your device makes a difference or not, I don't see why people can't just do what they're asked for a few stinkin' minutes.

Your post made me think of all the times I've gone to the grocery store to find people parked in the fire lane in front of the store because, "I just had to run in for a minute". Minute or no minute, that's what parking spaces are for!

Anyway, the two times I've flown in the past couple of months with the reader, I just peruse the SkyMall catalog or the newspaper for the 10 or 15 minutes during takeoff/landing...no biggie

Course you can then use the newspaper to *conceal* your eReader!

lol, actually I always turn off my portable devices mainly on the principle that there's no point in causing any problems/frustration, especially on a crowded airplane where anything questionable you do can lead to your detainment upon arrival, and... I can use the 10-minute cat-nap!

I was going to ask if those that turned their off actually did so or if they just put it into "sleep" by using the slide switch...

I slid it and put it in the seat back in front of me. I only slide it so it won't turn the page on me.
