My Sidekick (Hiptop) Experience

I've been experimenting with a T-Mobile Sidekick (made by Danger as the HipTop) for a little over a week. I previously used a Clie 760 and primarily used HandStory for web content. T-Mobile has a 14 day return policy, and as of this date I still haven't decided whether or not I will return it. The results are mixed.

On the positive side, it is great to have "live" web access. Where there is a signal, I would say the speed is about the same as dialup. But there is not always a signal. This varies from city to city and can be quite frustrating. While I generally get a pretty good signal on my commute, and a strong signal in my office (where I really don't need it), I get no signal in my home. I have to go outside to be able to browse.

The e-mail is also handy, and if you are a fan of AIM, it is also included. The best thing about the e-mail is that you can receive and view Word and PDF files. The color screen is pretty good (not as good as the Clie),but the font is small and unchangeable. The PIM aspects are very weak since there is no true synch with Outlook or any other PIM. As for other applications, forget it, since they don't exist.

Battery life is good. You can use it all day with heavy use and browsing. The phone is awkward to use, but it does come with a headset.

Like I said, it is a mixed bag. If you decide to get one, make sure you get it from a corporate store which has the 14 day return policy. By the way, the cost is $20 per month for unlimited access if you have a T-Mobile account. You can get data only for $30 per month.
