Help! I'm having problems with ePubs and my Sony.

This is a reposting of this problem, which is also in the ePub section, but as more peeps visit here, I thought I'd try to catch the eye of an expert. (She grovels).

When I load ePubs onto my Sony 505 and zoom the font to large, I get a narrow strip of text down the centre of the page and huge margins. I really hate this.

I'm not a techie, so if you do have any suggestions please make them simple. On the other hand, if you have some really useful advice that really needs technical explanation I can always phone a friend who'll translate to Bookcat-speak.

This is caused by the settings in the epub, which can use <em> measurements for the margins--that is, the margins are a set number of "em-widths," based on font size, instead of a set number of pixels.

It's common to do this with indents, so that as you expand the text, you don't have tiny indents that you can't see at the new size. It's unfortunately also common to use as margins.

The way around it is to edit or reconvert the epubs. (If it's a DRM'd epub, there's no simple way to fix it; the file would have to have the DRM stripped before it could be edited/converted.)
