Where is the PRS600 made?
Hey there. I'm new to this whole ebook reader way of life but I'm very excited to leap in! I've already decided that I want a black prs600. I'm canadian and the 399 price tag is a bit hefty, especially with the US dollar doin so well and the price being only 299. If I can get it back over the border duty free it would be amazing. As unlikely as it is,hopin it's made in the USA so was wondering if anyone knows where the prs600 is made?

Mine doesn't actually say. I suspect somewhere in asia, but I have no proof.
Strangely enough though, my PRS-600 has a statement on the back "DC: 5.2V EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY MADE IN CHINA". I find that odd. Sony doesn't tell us where the reader is made, but on the reader's back, they say where the power supply is made, and it doesn't even come with the reader. It's a grossly overpriced $29.99 option. That's only ~10 times more that you can get a charger on eBay, and some of them actually have Sony printed on them. |

I am pretty sure the "DC: 5.2V EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY" describes the voltage needs for the device, and the "Made in China" tells you where the device is made.
Such is the way of our current industrial system. No offense intended to our Chinese friends. ![]() |

Most electronics devices of this sort are made in one of the two China's - either "Republic of" or "Peoples' Republic of".

The "Republic of China" is the name of the country that is on the island of "Taiwan".

I mean no disrespect for the Chinese people (mainland or Taiwan), but I suspect that the manufacturing plants on mainland China are little more than forced labor camps. Those of us in the West might hate our jobs and thus do a lousy job, but we can change jobs or companies or careers fairly easily. When we are happy we do great work. But I doubt you have a lot of happy workers in manufacturing plants in mainland China. There doesn't seem to be a lot of incentive for the workers to do top quality work.
When I was growing up in the 1960's nearly everything was stamped made in Japan. Then a bit later most things came stamped made in Taiwan. But we got solid, quality built merchandise. The crap we get these days stamped made in China is not IMO the fault of the Chinese laborers who build it but the fault of the Chinese system which treats it's workers like cattle and places emphasis on quantity rather than quality. |
