Bye bye dead tree books! You will be missed!
Well, I needed some cash desperately, so I took a bath from Half Price Books and gave them over half my books.
I kept all the authors I would read again, autographed books and special editions (except Harry Potter), and my Star Wars novel collection (which was about 1/3 of my total books, I've got all of them LOL). So time to re-arrange the shelves, condense and redo my "man-cave". |

A "man-cave" with Star Wars books?
Does not compute. |

It doesn't matter if a man keeps Erma Bombeck and Martha Stewart in his man-cave. The point is, it's his darned cave and he can have anything he wants in it (or his wife lets him). Same goes for women and our nests (except no man will ever tell me what goes in mine and live to tell anyone else)!

There are certain connotations to the word "cave" in relation to a man's private domicile, that usually don't include sci-fi. (Unless it's sci-fi related to sports, beer, girls, tools or cars.) That was my only point.
Now, if he'd called it his "nerd-nook," "ready room" or "sanctum," for instance, I wouldn't have said a thing... Last edited by Steven Lyle Jordan; 09-30-2010 at 12:36 PM. |

Is there such a thing as a woman cave? Or a man nest?

I have NEVER heard any woman describe or call a room in her home a woman cave.
And the only so called men who presume to have man caves are insecure types who have to go around shouting at the top of their lungs proclaiming their manhoods rather then just going about their business like ordinary people. If you can't live your life without constantly stating that you're a man & have a mancave, blah, blah, blah, then you need to track down a REAL man to learn how to actually be one. |

I used the term "nest" because women tend (note I said tend) to nest to accommodate a family and friends, etc. The closest most will have to the equivalent of a man cave would be something like a sewing and/or crafts room. When a woman feels the need to retreat, it's more likely to be to a friend's house rather than in isolation in a dedicated room. |

Why not just use the term inner sanctum or private sanctuary, both of which are gender neutral? I'll be damned if there is such a place in my house, since space is too valuable for exclusive use by an individual. Heck, I even store my books in my child's room.

Because it sounds too stuffy or stuck up? Keep in mind, my friends tend to have a wacky sense of humor so they will latch onto wacky terms like man cave.

IMO "cave" hits it pretty well without any macho-strings attached.
I never felt like one. For me the 'I explode from sheer manliness' guys are as ridiculous as 'diva'-chicks, or 'professionally' homosexuals, geeks, statistical etnically underrepresented i.e. people where it seems their life mission statement is to show everybody and his brother how damn gay/black/indie/emancipated/whatever they are every second of their life - regardless if the other cares or not. I also believe it often is a crafts-room or corner (in my case a computer/gadget construction/repair corner) in other cases kind of a trophy-room or shelf (star-wars figures, etc.) inner sanctum is IMO even more private than this. A much stronger term I'd rather reserve for someones meditations place or a memorial corner for the passed beloved one etc. |

Be it a man-cave, den, office, inner sanctum, war room or what-ever it's a private place to get away from the family and do your own thing. I think it is important for some guys to get away and relax without (in a way) requirements to have the space be anything other than what they want. For me it's nothing about being 'man-ly', but more about the space to call my own.
