In my case it took 4 weeks to get my Iliad since they didn't had any devices available. The actual shipping time was 4 or 5 days (to Sydney via UPS) that was in December 2006.

Australian Customs also charged me more than 200 AUD as an import tax :-(

I got my unit back in August last year but I don't recall paying any Customs or import tax.

I think you're allowed to purchase items over the internet to the value of AU$1000 before they charge you import tax and customs fees.

I see the current iLiad worked out to be just over AU$1000 but you have to be very unlucky to be taxed on that and over $200 that's a bit much (Customs Xmas fund

Did you purchase any other accessories which bumped up the price ?

The actual shipping time is quiet fast from UPS about 3 days but the delay is with iRex processing your order.

AFAIK, duty free threshold is 800 AUD.

I was also ordering leather case, but it was shipped separately (with free extra stulys due to delay with shipment).

I've heard that people buy expensive stuff from eBay and sometimes customs do not charge them, sometime does. So I was unlucky one :-(

maxim75, refer to this link for info on Customs and import duty.

With regards to eBay I think a lot of the sellers usually declared their goods as either a gift or under value their items below the threshold price to avoid tax.

I guess I will need a bit of luck since the current price of Iliad is almost as high as 1100 Aussie dollars

How long was the delay ? A couple of weeks ? I would have ordered it straight away but have to make some ends meet =( But it would be reassuring to me to know that I would not have to wait for ages when I get the money.

And since you obviously had the gadget for a few months I want to ask - are you guys generally happy with your Iliad?

Now when I'm a reading a lot of PDF stuff from my 22" LCD monitor (and making inplace notes using the Acrobat PDF) and sometimes have a feeling that the bones in my neck are about to crack (because I have to stare in front of me for hours).

How much easier to read(making notes with stilys) from an Iliad compared to a LCD monitor?

Y'all don't pay the EU VAT do you? If not, the price will drop (by 18% if I remember correctly, which would still be 902 AUD, but it helps).

Thanks NatCh, you're absolutely right, I just dig out the old invoice from iRex and this is what they charged me :

Invoice date : 20 July 2006

Your Shopping cart - order: 960

Description Quantity Unit price Total
iLiad e-reader 1 $ 699.00 $ 699.00
Zone Rates, First Item, Plus Additional Items ((EU $ 55.00 $ 68.72
Grand total $ 767.72

Scifier, So the price I paid for the iLiad was US$699 (shipping not taxable) which converts to way less then AU$1000 by today's currentcy excahnge rate. So in theory if the price is still US$699 at check out you should not have to pay any import tax at all.

I can't comment on the delivery time since I ordered one of the first batches available so the long delay was to be expected.

As far as reading goes you can't compare with the LCD screen, it's so much better, basically just like reading a paper book, can read anywhere and it's light and easy to carry around.

I don't annotate documents much but it's very easy to do just like pen on paper.
Good luck and have fun with your new toy.

As far as I remember on customs form price in AUD was higher than $1000.
So import tax was applied.

I've ordered on 10 December 2006 and got my device right after Christmas on 27 December 2006.

Generally I'm quite happy with the device - screen is very easy to read on bright sunlight and its much larger than my PDA screen (hx4700) I used for reading before Iliad. Considering that I'm reading quite a lot, its worth its high price.

The downside is that operating time is not that long as I expeced. I'm recharging my Iliad every second or third day on average. Currently you can't read CHM files and HTML format support is limited, so I had to convert lots of books from CHM into PDF.
