Hunger Games: Katniss & Rue fan video

This is a surprisingly well done fan video of a scene from the Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. This was the last book series that me and my lady were able to finish together, so these books will always have a special place in my heart.

Well they've selected Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss for the upcoming Hunger Games movie.

Seriously? Katniss is 16 at the start of Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence is like 21/22.. They couldn't find a younger actress?

The words of Suzanne Collins herself:

“As the author, I went into the casting process with a certain degree of trepidation. Believing your heroine can make the leap from the relative safety of the page to the flesh and bones reality of the screen is something of a creative act of faith. But after watching dozens of auditions by a group of very fine young actresses, I felt there was only one who truly captured the character I wrote in the book. And I’m thrilled to say that Jennifer Lawrence has accepted the role.”

Collins also added:

“In her remarkable audition piece, I watched Jennifer embody every essential quality necessary to play Katniss. I saw a girl who has the potential rage to send an arrow into the Gamemakers and the protectiveness to make Rue her ally. Who has conquered both Peeta and Gale’s hearts even though she’s done her best to wall herself off emotionally from anything that would lead to romance.

Most of all, I believed that this was a girl who could hold out that handful of berries and incite the beaten down districts of Panem to rebel. I think that was the essential question for me. Could she believably inspire a rebellion? Did she project the strength, defiance and intellect you would need to follow her into certain war? For me, she did. Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this amazing for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.”

I guess if the author herself signed off on it, it was the best choice they had available. Thinking about it though, the Katniss character would be pretty hard for a young teen girl to try and master. A lot of different things going on in that persona, she would have had to be a pretty talented actress to do it justice.

Problem is for me (and I suspect for a lot of other folks) is that the image in my mind and the reality of Jennifer Lawrence don't mesh together.

As Ms. Collins was involved in the choice of Ms. Lawrence, I'll accept her choice. Just don't know if it will work for me.

I'm right there with you. She isn't what I pictured either, although I don't know if I'd say that is a bad thing. In my opinion there is no way they could have picked a teen girl and stayed "true" to the books anyway. Not when you stop and think that she was naked and getting full body waxes and the like in quite a few different scenes.

It was a pretty in your face part of the storyline. I think just to drive home the fact that these kids weren't thought of as kids, they were objects.

Not that I think they'll include any of the questionable scenes in the movies anyway, just saying that some of these things would never be allowed to translate from the page to the screen in the first place.

Why does the real life ages of an actress matter?
When you watch a film, do you look at characters and critically think about who is playing who, what ages, marital status etc., or just dive into the story. There are no actors or actresses, no real world. Only the story and characters involved?

I agree astra. I don't know how many movies I've seen were the actor totally looked the age they were playing. Then I go check imdb & say whoa. It doesn't take away from the experience. Anyway, video is great.
