Considering a K3 WiFi

Do I really need to open an account with amazon in order to have all the features activated on this thing, especially interested in the "collections" feature?

Does this require credit card information?

Mostly planning to use it to read free books I've downloaded from here and will load from my 'puter.

And as a bad omen, the first book I looked up on amazon that I may want to buy is not available (Fahnestock/MacAfee translation of Les Misérables), oy.

Thanks,

Scott

Yep, as far as I know, your Kindle needs to be registered to an account to at least allow you to organise your books in collections.

I don't recall them offering any other option when I registered. Paypal in definitely out. I've heard other users giving addresses not connected to them, or of real-life places in the US but I'm pretty sure Amazon's started to crack down on the practice.

Les Miserables has given lots of users lots of headaches. Piece of advice: you won't always find what you're looking for, and when you do, depending on where you live, you might come across the geographical restrictions' wall, so get ready to suffer some disappointments now and then.

However, it's not the device's fault . I've had it for almost a year and I love it. Easy to use, nice screen, easy access to one of the biggest outside-of-the-US ebook store and the support of a numerous Kindle community on the net (and especially here at MR ).

Welcome to the fora!

You certainly need to open an account with Amazon: your email and basic info. That's a requirement when registering the device. 1st time while using it, will ask for your Amazon credentials (username and password) if you don't have one you can't register your Kindle and you cannot use it.

But you do not need a credit card to side load mobi books. The credit card is needed to buy Amazon's books. If you just want to side load free books, that is not a requirement, as far as I know. Keep in mind that without a credit card on your account, you won't be able to buy any Amazon's book though.

You can buy Amazon gift cards, and apply them to your account. Purchases will first be deducted from the gift card balance. Lots of people use only gift cards, and do not keep a credit card on file. I believe that you cannot do pre-orders without a credit card on file, though.

I've also heard that the Collections features requires you to connect via wireless at least once, to activate the feature.

Yes, so that you can register and manager your Kindle. The Collections feature isn't active until you register.

No, I have no credit card associated with my account and have no problems.

Thanks all, for the info and suggestions.

I may be just overly paranoid about having too much of my personal info floating around the ether. And now that I think about it, I may already have an account with Amazon from buying woodworking tools years ago.

Then you likely do have an account. Just add gift cards to it and you won't need to do anything about a valid and up to date credit card.
