Likelihood of 2.X upgrade?
Does anyone care to guesstimate *if* and *when* Kindle 2 will get an upgrade? Judging from K1 -> K2 upgrades is it likely to happen?
Also I heard Amazon released a kindle simulator that is one step forward in a path to ePub, is it true? |

Now that the new one is out most likely not. When the Kindle 2 was released the Kindle 1 didn't anything at all above 1.2.

If Amazon sticks to that update policy the K3 is going to be my last Kindle. The fact that they didn't update my K1 anymore really made me hesitate already..

Hey Amazon !!! what about us?! :-(
If you ask me, the software updates should last until the warranty runs out for the last person that bought and registered a new Kindle 2.
I still have 3 months warranty left, and there must be people around with 9, 10 or 11 months left of warranty (especially the eBay buyers)... there must be thousands and thousands of us still with a lot of warranty left. Surely Amazon should consider the money that they made from us, a legitimate enough reason to make sure that our older generation Kindles get the longest life and best user experience possible if software updates are what it takes to do it... does anyone else agree? "Tech support" and "warranty repairs" shouldn't be the "end-of-the-line" IMHO... if it's improvable, it should be improved (and we know the K2 can be improved from a software level). Or do they want another generation of disgruntled Kindle owners that feel left-out? i.e. K1 owners |

Still, it seems they may need to update DX/DXG if they have no hardware replacement in the works (to add PDF features, Voice Guide). And at that point it might not be much of an incremental cost to upgrade K2 as well. The rumor about ePub is wacky. It concerns the kindlegen tool that is used to build ebooks for Kindle platform. One of the things it can do is to convert ePub files to mobi format. The claim is that the ePub source files are getting packed into the mobi file. But I don't see any evidence of this myself when I run the tools, and the source of the rumor doesn't present any, either. Of course, ePub and mobi are very similar, and most ePub source files can be used nearly unchanged when creating the equivalent mobi format (mobi's CSS is more limited, and it doesn't support SVG graphics..). It is certainly not the case that the entire ePub file is stored inside the mobi file. It would nearly double the size of the mobi file, and that is not happening. Likewise the Kindle Previewer app can be used to initiate conversion to mobi, and used to view the resultant mobi file. But this is all in the name of making conversion to mobi more convenient, not for supporting ePub viewing on Kindle. |

Thank you all for the info. I would really like to see the K2 undergo a few more updates. It's been released for about a year, and that's not obsolete enough. Anyway, that would pinpoint the kind of commitment Amazon has to it's hardware.
