Considering getting an eReader, which one?
I'll admit, I've mostly researched the Nook and the Kindle. The differences between them seem to be, for the most part, negligible, except for a few key things.
One important thing to me is the ability to buy internationally. I live in the US, but I travel outside of it a lot and may someday live outside of it. It looks like there's no option to buy internationally with a Nook? Is the Kindle the best for that, then? The only other thing I'm bothered by with the Kindle is the whole DRM issue. Suggestions? |

You won't get away from the DRM issue no matter what reader you get. That's a publisher issue, except to the extent that Nook and the Kindle use a sort of proprietary DRM version rather than the ADE (Adobe) "standard."
Buying internationally from a US base isn't all that difficult. Most of the sites I've used for book buying go by your "account address" rather than limiting you by IP address. Some seem to key off the nationality of your credit card - so if and when you move overseas, just keep a US card open and available. I'd also give some thought to how much you need or want wifi and/or 3G. I know I am on my computer most of the day and so it's no bother at all to connect my reader by cable - to download news or organize my books, as well as to charge it up. I've always got at least 5 to 10 "to be read" books loaded on the reader, so I hardly need the added temptation of "instant gratification" but you have to assess your own needs in this regard. Before you decide, do take a look at the matrix of e-readers here on Mobile Read (click on the "Wiki" at the top of the page). |

DRM within the 'big boy' ranks is starting to fall away it might seem as a lot of authors are demanding that their books be DRM free. I know when you submit a new book for the Kindle shop on Amazon you get a choice there to implement DRM or not.
Most authors are aware of the relative pointlessness of DRM and subsequently tend not to wish to impose it on their readers. (At most, they may however have watermarks which is a perfectly valid option). As for the international sales, there's a lot of progressive authors who are providing downloads direct from sites like smashwords, their own WWW site or other similar non-geographically restricted places. I'd go for the Kindle. Amazon have the best bookstore around, and Kindle DRM is very easy to remove, should you wish to do so.

Thanks guys. Another question - is it true that, with the kindle, you can only buy from Amazon, but with the Nook, you can buy from Amazon and other bookstores?

No, not true. The Kindle will read any DRM-free Mobipocket-format book. The nook cannot read Amazon books; it uses primarily ePub format books.

One other thing of note: The Nook can read library books.
