To the Hoop: The Seasons of a Basketball Life by Pulitzer Prize-winning sports reporter & columnist Ira Berkow (Wikipedia) is his personal memoir of his experience with the sport over the decades, both playing it himself and learning from professional athletes as well, free courtesy of re-publisher Diversion Books, originally hardcovered from the Perseus Group's Basic Books imprint in 1997.
It's actually rather rare but quite pleasant when we get a decent non-fiction freebie (on purpose) from an officially-established publisher who cares enough to put it in multiple stores, and this looks like an especially nice one, so I've bumped it up the posting queue. Currently free @ B&N (also UK), Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK), Kobo & iTunes (both available to Canadians). And this has been the selected* 3rd (non-repeat) free book thread of the day. Enjoy! Description Ira Berkow has been many things in his life—a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, a respected columnist, and a passionate sports fan. He also knows how to thread a pass into the paint. In this wildly entertaining chronicle of his life as both a devotee and gym rat, Berkow writes with good humor and piercing insight about talking strategy with Walt Frazier, running the court with Oscar Robertson, and seeing the game from the inside. From his youth, playing on the courts in Chicago in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s to growing older and using the wisdom he’s gained to school players half his age, Berkow retains a competitive spirit, and a deep love of hoops. This moving tale of love for the game, for his friends and family, and for life itself is a must-read for anyone who wants the ball when the game is on the line. * Well, technically, I had an entirely different set of freebies ready to go for the next few days, but even though some of them made it as far as Kobo and Google Play as well as Amazon and thus seemed official, it turned out they were all actually multi-store glitches that didn't last past this afternoon. The Penguin personnel seem like unto the now-retired Sony bobble-head birds when it comes to surprise price changes. Eh, maybe we get a few back later should they change their minds again. ![]() Last edited by ATDrake; 08-30-2014 at 02:23 AM. Reason: It would help if I linkified the Wikipedia link, Y/N? |
