PDF's and the PRS-505

So, I have got a bunch of ebooks in the pdf format and I want to know how may I reformat them for the 505 (Page size, Margines, etc.)

I know its not the nost ideal format but according to what I read hear, conversion to LRF can be a pain, so what is my best option?

What does "text reflow" mean?

Convert it to LRF with BookDesigner if the book does not have pictures. With pictures, it is better to leave as is its and rely on the text reflow function of the reader. Magnify the pdf and you will see reflow in action.

I'm also reading PDF on my 505 and it works quite well in landscape mode without zooming in (so line formatting will not be destroyed): What I do is just cut off the page borders (on MacOs using Skim) to remove the wasted space and get a litte bigger characters.

Thankyou for your responses and the broder tip- will experiment. I actually like the reflow. But sometimes when you zoom in, the reader does not show images.

There is a good way to convert pdfs, as long as they contain recognizable text. This is my procedure:

1.- Save pdf as doc (if it has pictures, save it as html too and you'll have them all collected in one folder).

2.- Edit the doc with MS Word (you can change font type, size, paragraphs, titles...). Page size: 11,7 x 9 cm. The rest is up to your preferences.

3.- Edit the pictures with Photoshop or similar so the max size is either 11 cm high or 8 wide, 8 bit gray, 166 dpi.

4.- Paste images on doc (including cover, which should be 11,7 x 9)

5.- Print as pdf. pdf page size: 11,7 x 9 cm

6.- Create TOC in pdf if wanted.

7.- Change title and author in pdf properties so they will show properly on the Reader.

Done.

Check the link to my "libro" in my signature and try that as a sample of what can be done.

It takes a while to do it perfect if there are lots of picts, but normally it is a piece of cake. You can transfer it directly to the Reader, no need to prepaginate.

AFAIK no other format equals a proper lovingly prepared pdf in the 505. Will work for any e-rader, for that matter.

Hope this helps.

Edit:

You asked for margins and the like. Here are mine. You should work out yours.

Top: 0,6 cm; Bottom: 0; L&R: 0,2.
Header: 0,15 with 8pt bold italic for the title and Author. Foot: 0.
Main text in justified Futura Lt Bt 13 with 0,2 bleed in 1st row and 3pts post paragraph space.
Chapter titles in 16 bold centered, with no bleed. 50 pre and 30pts post paragraph space.

I may vary the rest.

Usually i do convert pdf to html with either Calibres pdftohtml or with the MoibiPocket Creator, next step is fixing formatting and toc in html if required, then i use Calibre to convert the html to a proper lrf file.
If the book contain tables or a lot of pictures it may be better to keep pdf. The tool "soPdf" can help to cut the margins if required...

Mathematical Equations

I have found that mathematical equations do not reflow properly at all. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on how to enlarge these PDF's without losing the formatting?

Many Thanks

Here is a copy of the Sony provided guide to making PDFs for the Reader. It is posted elsewhere at MobileRead, I just can not find it at the moment to create a link for you.

That's a popular attachment. It helps when you know the exact filename...
