More App Restrictions
No doubt I'll get jumped on for being anti-apple all over again, but here's the latest on App Restrictions for Ipad:
Steve Jobs beheads iPad apps for acting like desktops http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06...rom_app_store/ |

How is it "anti-apple" to post a news story? It's only "anti-apple" if all you do here in an Apple forum is post negative comments, without ever bothering to contributing anything positive or constructive, IMHO.

kjk, I don't feel it is, but have been attacked in the past for posting. I'm no fan of Apple's business practices, but do like to keep up on the technology. Competition is good for us all.

IMO, you can't have it both ways. Either you agree to work in a gated community or you go where "anything goes". People sold software long before Apple's App store. There are other places to do business although maybe not as comfy (Apple hosts his product, does his merchant account, his advertisement, and a decent price %). I think of Apple's app store like an HOA. They are great for many people but when you put your trash out at 6:45 instead of 7:00 and get fined, don't go complaining. You agreed to all their silly rules and just because you got burned doesn't mean you need to tear down the system for everyone. You are free to leave and live elsewhere. It looks like a nice program, maybe Apple is planning on something like that in the future. However, it's their right to not sell something just like Wal-Mart does. Writing a piece of software doesn't give you inalienable rights to put on Apple's store and sell it. |

Of course there are levels of control an application hoster can exercise, between "whatever we say on any particular day" or "anything goes". |

I wonder why they don't do what Apple do on the Android store.. It is clearly the biggest setback for the platform, that there is absolute no control in the market.. You don't have to be Apple-restrictive, but no control at all?

I think that is why. Let the users/developers/society decide. |

This is not the first time that Apple has changed its mind about the appropriatness of an app after the fact... sometimes many months after the fact despite the cumbersome approval process all new apps are subjected to.
That's the real problem. If they're going to enforce rigorous app standards they better get it right the first time, otherwise they look like arbitrary jackasses. When they do this they damage both the developers who have presumably made decisions based on expected revenue from the app, and those who paid for the app expecting support and updates. I'm sure Apple has a formidable legal team that would bankrupt anyone who decides to challenge their rulings or try to get appropriate compensation for the damages these decissions cause. The part that bothers me the most every time this happens is Apple's smug, cavalier attitude as shown by their curt non-explanations. Btw... in case you're wondering, I consider myself a member of the Apple booster club. This sort of incident doesn't just annoy their detractors. |

They need to upgrade once every year or two, and have a system for devices to be updated to the new one. Have one unified and easy to use app store (if they don't already, I know little about Android etc.). The digital world is just complicated for developers. On the one hand it's a boon for indie developers to get their products on a virtual store--much easier than getting a product in a physical store before. On the other hand, it can be more limiting in the current environment with Apples restrictions and the competition like Android and WebOs not getting their asses in gear yet and providing devs with a comparable platform to sell their apps. But that should improve in the future. I really think Microsoft needs to get in the game--and they are--and really nail the app store for their Windows phones, whatever tablet devices they end up with (or just running their OS etc.). |
