need calibre help

Hello Everyone,

I have been using calibre without problems since last night since not long after I got my kindle last year. Last night I tried to enter the metadata for some new books onto calibre. I got the following message Failed to read metadata. What happened? How can I fix it? If I can't fix it then is there another way that I can copy my books over to calibre?

When you add a book to calibre, it attempts to read the metadata from the file. If that fails, then you need to set the metadata manually. The steps would be:
  • Transfer the book into calibre
  • If you loaded the book from your Kindle, delete the book on your Kindle.
  • Edit the metadata in calibre
  • Click 'Send to device' to transfer the book with edited metadata to the Kindle.

If that's what you're doing, and the book is not showing up on the Kindle with the corrected title/author, please report back with the steps you took and the results.

Yes, it will.

I was looking at the "save to disk" feature, and it wanted to know where to save it to. Should I save it to where my library is, or do I want to save it to a different location? Will it break stuff if I save it to my library's location? (I want my calibre library to have all the correct metadata, etc., in its files, but I'm not quite certain what the save to disk functionality does that's different)

The most common use of Save to Disk is when you want to write a file to a SD card that is not mounted in a reader device or if you have a reader that Calibre can not transfer to on any terms except as a Drive

Do Not use this to write into your Calibre library. The results may get very ugly

If you want your books inside the database to have updated metadata, you can convert them from format1 to format1 (same format) and that will update the metadata for that format. Alternatively, you can save it out, then open the book to edit the metadata and drag the saved-out copy back in, which will overwrite that format.

I apologize for incorrectly stating my problem. I was trying to add my books from my kindle onto calibre and kept getting the metadata message. I am unable to add my books to calibre even though I have been able to up to this point.

Please outline the specific steps you're taking and what you're observing after each step.

I connect my kindle to my computer and minimize it. 2. I open calibre. 3. I click on the add books. Now I get the message about the metatdata.
