Would you like to see different "modes" for the Iliad?

Hi!

This has come up on the iRex forums, but it didn't really go very far so I'm putting this poll up to collect your opinions on this topic.

What is this about?
We have heard a lot of different opinions about the things people are planning on doing with their Iliad.
Some are going to take it to school or to conferences and are going to take notes, use it like paper, others are going to read complex documents and want to annotate them, still others just want to sit back on their sofa and read, or take it along for the daily commuting or for long trips by plane and train, without readily available power-outlets.

The Iliad is a very versatile device, it has a lot of different potential uses. Now, running all the features of the Iliad uses up a lot of power, so for those of us that just want to read that means we get less-than-optimal battery-life because of features we don't actually need most of the time.

The idea here is, to create different "Modes of Operation" that give the user what he need, not more and not less, making the device a bit more user-defineable.
For example, a book-mode could do without network support, wireless, maybe even without Stylus. Processor could be tuned down since it wouldn't have to do much. This would give the "book-users" beter battery-life without actually losing anything important.

What do you think? What are your ideas for "Modes" or "Profiles"

Actually, these modes should not be necessary.
If the power management works as intended, then all should work for any situation as wanted.

- pen needed? take it out, power gets consumed, if not leave it in, power off.
- wlan and lan? connection needed? no, then power down the devices.
- need lots of computing power? no? go to 33 MHz.
- Have been idle for ages? go to suspend mode.

I still hope, iRex can manage that. The biggest problem i see is the software side. Trying to make standard desktop applications work efficient on a mobile device is not an easy task. There should be lots of prerendering pages, even on disk if necessary, keeping lots of pages in memory (so no diskusage is needed) and reduce rendering time, best if just little power is needed for consequential page turns.

But if thats not going to happen, then they better give us different operatin modes

I agree it would be a big plus to have something like "user profiles". And as tribble says, it should also be possible thanks to Linux capabilities to load and unload modules to do that in a running system.

Different modes of operation would be nice indeed but quite unnecessary if iRex delivers what they promised: good power management.
Just like tribble mentioned, if you dont use it(the feature) turn it off. This device is not so complex as a laptop where you can have different levels of power saving; It's just a matter of making the best out of the hardware.

The power managment feature is an ongoing process....they have made progress but they're not yet there.

Agree with the above, I don't really see what modes you would have and how this would work, other than making device activation manual - in your example - why would wireless always be on? The button would activate it and do a search, then after a period of inactivity, switch itself off again.
Same with processor speed right? Unless the pen is out, with good pre-page loading the processor speed can be low for instance ...

The device is appealing because it's simple, keep it simple but make power management automatically effective.
