BackupBuddy for Windows Mobile goes Beta (initial findings)

Update: Read Alex's post below for his initial findings. Looks like there is still some way to go for the release of the final version.

Loss of data is the source of constant angst to many handheld users. Blue Nomad is now offering a beta version of BackupBuddy for Windows Mobile. The company has been around the Palm scene for some time, and I remember well that BackupBuddy for Palm has saved my butt on a couple of occasions. If you would like to join the free beta test, send an email to beta [at] bluenomad [dot] com to receive all required information.

If you don't want to wait for the end of the beta period and need a good backup solution for Windows Mobile, I recommend you try out Sprite Backup Premium.

I already had a chance to test V1.0 beta 1 (see screenshots attached). My initial findings:

+ easy interface
+ backup encryption (96bit-DES)
+ backup is in compatible PKWare ZIP format
+ daily scheduler
- not fully VGA-aware (uses only 1/4 of the screen in 640x480 mode)
- no weekly/monthly scheduler
- no option to define destination of backup file
- backup preparation slow (seems to be a loop, starts over again and again, bug)
- backup process didn't work on my Axim X50v. Error message said that it was unable to create a backup file on my storage device.

There is also a 'Checkpoint'-feature which I wasn't able to test because it required at least one good backup.

BackupBuddy tries to store the backup file into

\Storage Card\BackupBuddy\My_device_name\Current Backup.zip

This cannot work because my storage card is called "SD Card". Let's see if they can get it fixed in beta 2!
